Question Whining noise on 03 WRX

In the last couple of days I have noticed a weird sort of whining noise at around 64mph. A couple of mph either side and it stops. If I brush the brake pedal it has no effect (like it did when my brakes were squealing at a certain speed). Also if I snick it into neutral and coast at 64mph the noise is still there so I'm thinking not gearbox related (but I am only guessing).

It's really hard to tell where the noise is coming from as it isn't that loud.

I thought maybe it's a wheel bearing but this happens in a straight line rather than during corner loading.

Any ideas anyone please?? The car has done 25k and has been regularly serviced.

PMSL! No that is more of a sickening drone rather than a whine.

there is a crossmember change from the one that holds the rear diff to one that is slightly thicker. also need to check the crossmember has the dampners on the ends.
your dealer can check to see if it needs to be done

Can someone explain this some more.

I have a new 05 wrx that does the same. small whining noise at 63-64 mph. No noise either side of that speed. Thought it was a slight resonance in the drivetrain, and they all did it. The demo I had did the same too.

Any other ideas?

Is this normal or not?

That problem is all over the world, with no apparently solution. From rear diff changes to shaft etc...and the problem still there....

The only way it went away was to inflate more the front than the rear , but if it rains, it comes back again for a couple of days. It sounds like rubberish....right?

No one lost their tranny to this problem, but its annoying, because 60mph is a standart road speed....So...pump up your radio, open the window or live with it....u got an automatic 60mph warning system....lol
