Default 5th gear retaining nut tightening

Hello there!

I have a slight click going into fifth & understand from the p1 owners forum that the retaining nut on the fifth gear often comes loose & can be tightened or replaced with a new redesigned nut from subaru.

I'm looking for some instructions on how to do this, and some advice as to wether or not I should really attempt it myself.

I'd rate my mechanical skills at around 3.5 - 4 spanners on the Haynes scale.

Any advice would be greatfully received.

Car is a my00 p1.

Cheers!

Not sure that the slight click is going to be caused by a loose nut as I can't see it would affect the synchromesh at all. The loose nut allows the 5th gear to slide arround on its shaft which you will see by the gear lever moving forwards and backwards under acceleration/decceleration. As it gets worse, the car will drop out of 5th usually on decceleration. There was a thread very recently about doing the job. IIRC Subaru charge about 2 hours for the job.
