I think there were some issues with the tumbler valves and expected signals to ECU. Seem to remember reading more about people playing with this mod on www.NASIOC.com or one of the other American boards

I'd be interested in this answer too

Since fitting the TD05 to my MY02 with mods running at about 1,4 bar the tumble valves give a creak like a very rusty door on cracking open the throttle......really annoying but no CEL !!

I was at Roger Clarks this morning dropping the car off and chatted to Matt who suggested ditching the OEM WRX bits and opting for a STi manifold / throttle body !! Seems OK to me but just wondered what the WRX ECU would make of the missing Tumble valves ???

Any mappers about who might be able to answer? Any body got any spare manifold bits (Conrad, Alyn, David ?? )

For as long as the bits are still connected then even if they are not "in place" its of no consequence, ecu does need to see the position sensors and that they are doing whats expected though.

Hi Bob

Thanks for the post I'm booked in for a re-map a week today.....

Just for clarification, if Matt swaps my MY02 bugeye WRX manifold / throttle bodies for an STi item can you can still map around the situation rather like mapping out P0420 CEL problems with a de-cat ??

Cheers

The parts need to be connected, otherwise there is nothing that can be done to stop a cel, there are no maps appertaining to the tumble valves available to "FRIG", if the parts are left then its no problem, don't worry I'll discuss with Matt either tomorrow or Monday.

AFAIK nope !!

The bugeye ECU expects to get messages from the Tumble valves and if they are absent the ECU throws a CEL .......

The STi ECU knows there are no tumble valves in the STi manifold so no problem

Still thinking about his one

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember someone in the states (possibly Cobb, which might mean it was actually an APS part) did a box or something that either simulated the valve, or allowed you to mount a part of the valve somewhere harmless and therefore stop the ECU throwing a CEL.

Bob - how do you recommend leaving the valves connected? I'd heard that they still needed to seat against something to stop them over-travelling? I assume you don't leave a whole spare manifold rattling around?!

Not sure they are a major restriction to be honest. I'll be retaining mine, the increased gas speed in the midrange is good for torque and will make your car quicker in real terms rather than squeezing the last few bhp from it at the top end.

Talking

APS do a tumbler valve delete kit for the newage WRX, this puts STi style tumbler housings in (although they have been ported) and it also has a little device that takes care of the electronics side so it doesnt throw up a CEL. Available next day if you require them

Have you (or APS) done any testing to measure the loss in torque and/or the gain in top end power when fitting these ?

Question

Andy, there is no mention of "torque loss" on the APS website only gains in the "high horsepower" area. Can you or have you proved otherwise via back to back testing of standard units versus APS units on your rolling road / test bed?

Andy / Conrad

I wasn't thinking of getting rid of the tumble valves for more power...I'm just convinced they are making an annoying noise

When I crack the throttle from idle there is a definate "creak" like a rusty door hinge from both ends of the manifold. I assumed the noise was from the tumble valves. The noise echoes through the cabin and in stop-start traffic it drives me mad....reaches for the loud button on the radio

I'm leaving it with Bob Rawle / Roger Clark to sort out at the moment

Out of interest how much is the APS kit Conrad ??

Cheers

No, but then I'm not trying to sell anything that someone may not need

Shaun

Thats an odd one The tumble valves should only be closed for a cold start, as soon as you touch the throttle, they open fully and remain open fully until the next cold start.
I doubt if that is your problem.
