TMIC - advice needed
I'm the owner of a MY94 WRX and am looking to upgrade the intercooler.
The car is mildly modified with a full decat, Blitz SUS ind kit and a Z4 ecu which has had the boost raised slightly to around 15 psi.
I'm not after massive power increases here as I know the best route for that would be an uprated turbo, FMIC and a decent aftermarket ecu mapped by a pro..I'm just looking to have reliable power at the increased boost without any DET and am happy to run a max of 300bhp.
I have heard that later TMICs will fit the early WRX with a bit of modification and will give better results. Can anyone offer any advice on what MY/version IC is the best to install and what is involved.
Thanks for any help with this
Neil

All of the later intercooler should fit with a little work. Although you will have to trim some metal work off the intercooler where it joins the throttle body, and maybe massage the bulkhead slighty and the gear box bracket (big hammer).
The MY97/98/STi 4 unit will fit but you need to cut off the DV elbow and blank it with ally plate and glue and self-tappers (a bit of a bodge), in order to clear the Idle speed control Valve.
Therefore a better option is the MY99/00/STi 5 unit which does not have this elbow, and the DV outlet can be blanked with a simple ally plate and a couple of M6 bolts.
The 01> WRX coolers are bigger again but the DV would still need to be blanked to clear the ISCV.
You should then make up a Samco hose (using part of the Pre96 Intercoller to turbo hose) to install the Pre96 DV in it's origional position.

When fitting a MY98 I/C to a friends MY95 car, I did this to address the issue with the ISCV valve thingy, interfering with the D/V location.
Basically, I cut off the 'L' shaped D/V take off, blanked off the hole left. Used the bit I cut off to make a straight D/V take off, then cut a new hole in the side od the end tank, dressed the tube up to fit the hole I made, then had it welded up. (need an alloy specialist to weld it, as its alloy!)
Painted it black again, and voila!
He also had to cut down the entry for the throttle body down too, and it is a tight fit, but its on there! Brackets needed a little persuasion too IIRC.
