Default Total cut out on top speed run, 98 Type R

Hi, im after helping a mate out who is experiencing a problem with his Type R impreza, the problem is that the car has completely shut down at high speed, the engine has cut out and shown all of the dash lights and now it will not start.

Does the impreza have any safety cut out features etc or has something possibly went pop, it is showing no signs of mechanical fault whatsoever, the car has been rebuilt with forged pistons etc and has been running fine for some time now, help appreciated, cheer's, jeff

Pull the dipstick out, and tell us what is on it. Oil/Oil and other particles (gold/copper coloured)

Im sure the car is mechanically sound, it made no odd noises and no smoke was let out of both the exhaust or the engine bay, im sure this fault is electical, or i hope it is for the sake of my mates pocket, looking for info so hopefully if i pop round next weekend i have a good idea what to look for, jeff

Id be careful if it was MAX speed, STi's seem to have habit of going pop around the 140 mark at sustained speed. 2 scools of thought,

1) is people generally dont know they need to run 100 ron so det occurs, and worsens at the top end. Also mods without remap and good fuel amplify the problem
2) There is a theory that the IC scoop hits a brick wall at high speed, meaning a rapid rise in cahrge temp - and det - then pop.

You could try an ECU reset and see if that clears it, but does sound odd

He had the 95ron syndrome on the first day of purchase which ended up with a cracked block and melted pistons hence the rebuild, i aint actually been to see the car yet just what i was told off him, i dont think it has any mechanical damage as he is well experienced in this department lol, how do i go about re-setting the ecu, would disconnecting the battery for some time do this? also are their any fault code checks or a diagnostic mode that can be carried out cheer's, jeff.

Just found out that the lights have gone off with everything else, think it might be a dodgy earth or a burnt wire somewhere, lets hope for the best
