Default Clutch judder on '03 STi

Any clutch experts among you.

I have a MY03 STi with 25k miles. Occaisonlly, especially when cold I get a bit of clutch judder, if I dip the peddle and take up the biting point again, it is fine.

Any of you guys had this?

I also, sometimes have a bit of that burning clutch smell, again only sometimes.

A bit of judder is normal on all scoobs.
Down to the material used in the clutch to cope with the power.
Not sure on the burning smell though. Too many emergency starts maybe? ;-)

Lots of the newage cars seem to get it (plus classics) - so it's "normal" in that sense, but that doesn't mean you have to accept it.

On mine (MY02) used to do it on cold and only during the Winter - ambient temp.

Searches on here revealed that the plate was picking up dirt and it stuck, causing the judder. A later plate seems to fix the issue - the garage told me they changed the friction plate material.

I took it back to the garage under warranty and had it replaced and it's been fine since. Also some say that a good full on power standing start will burn off all the deposits and solve the problem.

I think there might even be an pofficial Subaru alert on it - a search mine bring that one up, so it's a well known issue.

I was under the understanding that the judder on the scoobs was due to a clutch release bearing problem...???

I had it on my WRX but have fitted a later STI release bearing and all is ok now...

Thanks guys.

It is something I can live with. Just thought I may need a new clutch.

Take it back and demand the clutch judder "fix" as specified in a Subaru Service Alert about 6 years ago ... new clutch plate, cover, bearing AND flywheel.

Would have thought by now they had sorted it out...! For an 03 not sure if the above is valid really though!

Mine does it slightly the first time I drive off on a morning then its fine. Maybe it needs a bit of a warmth to work ok.
