Induction cone will probably lose you power unless you shield it from the heat in the engine bay. Standard airbox is very good for this

It might sound faster with a cone, but probably isnt. The minute power gain you might see is probably just from where its causing the car to lean out.

BLitz is one of the worst for killing the MAF (which will then destroy your engine ) although the MY97 MAF is stronger than 99/00

Good panel filter all the way, unless you are pushing big power and really need it.

Use the search, you will see hundred of posts highlighting the lack of point in an induction kit. If you want one, K&N is top of the list.

PS, better spend the money on a decat downpipe for some "real" power gain.

yeah, Its deffinitely pointless to risk a MAF blowing just so you can hear the woosh. Also, if DGAS's panel filter was hard to clean, maybe he should have tried to clean it a little more regularly, like, before no air can get through?

K&N or Green Air filters should be top of your list mate. Stay away from induction, unless you live in the Arctic where engine bays never get hot.

Firtsly, as your car is a 97, the MAf is not an issue in deciding which to go for.

The main deciding factor will be whether or not you plan to modify the car further. If you are looking for over 300bhp then an induction kit is the way to go. If you are happy with less than that, then fit a good quality panel filter and retain the standard airbox.

You won't gain any extra power from changing the filter purely on its own (not that you'd notice anyway-a couple of bhp tops) but it removes a restriction that will allow you to unlock more horses later when you add additional mods such as decat and more boost etc.

Mark is right, better save your dosh and decat the thing as you will definately feel the difference from that.
