Steering Lock

Steering Lock
Over the last few weeks I have developed a strange rattle coming from just behind the steering wheel which was only apparent at full throttle. This has steadily got slightly worse until I was accelerating hard out of a left hand bend and as I unwound the steering it felt like it locked With a bit of pressure to the right there was a clunk and everything was fine. This happened on 2 or 3 occassions (it is scary when it happens) when the wheel is turned to the left at approx 90 degrees.
After a few investigations of the steering rack etc. I am sure it is the steering lock that is broken in some way and keeps trying to lock into the steering column.
I have had the cowl off that surrounds the column and can get access to the lock / ignition barrel but I cannot see how to remove the unit to get at the steering lock (MY97 BTW)
Can anyone help ??
Cheers,
Ian

I am sure you realise this anyway but driving the car like this could not be any more dangerous.. not only for yourself.
the barrel is held in by security bolts which need to be slotted to remove.
