Found this on a japanese website :-
DATA RECORDER &
FUEL CONTROLLER
The SFC-HYPER R, fuel controller is made to measure several kinds of performance data. It can record the speed and the time at three ranges; 0-100m, 0-200m and 0-400m. Moreover, it can measure the time required to accelerate from 0km to 100km/h. In addition, it can measure the peak rpm and the top speed.
Apparently it's manufactured by a company called Fields, but I couldn't find any instructions for it.
It's worth $250 though!

I gather it's a fuel controller, mine is the "hyper" model not the "hyper R" but i could only find a picture of the "hyper R"
I have a seperate data recorder in the car.
When I first got the car I tried disconnecting it and the car wouldn't start, nut as i've said i've since had it set up properly and don't touch it now,
still not sure why it's there though and if it improves the car?

It can be used to alter the fuelling (sepcificall the AF ratio). Maybe on each indivudual cylinder if you're lucky (and have the monitoring equipment to use it!). If set-up OK, it can be used to lean out Subaru's pig-rich strategy. But it would be worth a sanity check in my opinion, as too lean could cause problems.
