How is it removed, is it a pull it job or is it threaded ?

I would have to check the old gear stick at home...though im pretty sure its a screw off...

also you have noting to loose, unscrew and pull up slightly should come off..

Well even if it were pull type...im sure you would unscrew and pull upwards at the same time...
