Brought a Decat Pipe today, not sure if I'm gonna fit it...
Went and got some new tyres fitted today (Eagle F1’s around) and was approached by this guy at the garage who offered to sell me a front decat pipe for my car. He went and got it; I looked it and impulsively brought it on the spot.
Not knowing much about these things, I’m now starting think it’s not such a good idea. It is a front downpipe section and will suppose ably fit my car (MY00). I want to know if I should fit it or get rid?
Will my car be legal if I do/will it pass and MOT?
Also, how much extra power can I expect? (I already have a Magnex rear silencer).

On paper it will fail the MOT with no cats but if you have the centre one still you "might" be ok. You'll still be legal on the orad though. You will experience a performnce increrase especially in the low down torque area.
PS if you dont want it ill have it

Fitting a downpipe will release some extra horses and improve throttle response nicely. It removes 1 cat (of two). Some say you can pass MOT on centre cat alone, others dont. Eitherway it doesnt seem that bigger issue if you want to improve the performance of your car as you can always have the old downpipe put back on for MOT.

I think you will find you will be ok with the centre one only as the cat will probably be hotter than when they do the MoT test.
I think it is worth the risk, but I'm just about to remove my Magnex de cat to fit a sports cat!
Very soon there will be a clamp down on 'our kind of cars' by the do gooders(Authorities), but the risk is small.
Another reason to change my system is my 19 year old daughter does not approve of my irresponsibility..........tut tut.

It will fit (as long as its not a JDM MY03 onwards car) but ... that design has been sperceded long ago, it still retstricts the wastegate, bettter bay far would be the type which has a full bell mouth.

No it is still a good upgrade, just that a slightly different, ie wider inlet mouth is available.
Dont fret and get it fitted.

It won't cause damage to your car, but that design is not the best by far, better gains are to be had with the bellmouth design as Bob said.
Do a search for scoobysports or hayward and scott downpipe and you will probably find some pics of the bellmouth design which allows better flow for the wastegate gasses.
The design of pipe you have there basically gives you an OEM sytle pipe minus the restrictions of the cat.

Can't say how much of a hp gain you will get, depends on the rest of the exhaust system, but removing a cat will def sharpen up the throttle response noticably, making things such as toe and heel a bit easier.

Thanks for all the advice people!! Decided i'm going to (hopefully) get the decat fitted this week. As long as it’s not going to do any harm, then I’m happy to give it a go.
Went for a blast today on the new tyres and I really enjoyed it. I am starting to really love my car and last thing I want to do is break it.
Thanks again for all the helpful advice and comments. I will let you know how I feel about the decat after its fitted. Cheers,
Paul.

Starting to have doubts about getting the Decat fitted having read that you need to have the ECU remapped after its fitted to stop the risk of the engine going bang. Something to do with a lack of necessary back pressure??? My car is a standard MY00, will the ECU self adjust to loosing a Cat. Help!!!

I've done about 20k in my year 2000 with a full decat, you do not need to get a remap, you could do, but it's not compulsory, I even run my car on regular 95 ron fuel, tried optimax, but the car hates it, goes very nicely too!!!
