Default best oil for MY02

Hi there,

Being rather new to Scoobies, I was just wondering which oil would be the best for my MY02 ?

I was told the Mobil1 0w40 is a very good choice, what are your thoughts about it ? What do you use ?

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Scooby. Your first enquiry will show you the nature of we owners obsession. Either this thread will light up, The Oilman will,as if by magic, appear or a collective sigh of resignation will be heard. The first thing to do is a search under oil and you will understand my comments.

Use Fully synthetic 5w-40 or 10w-40, Motul or Silkolene are very popular here.

There is a "group buy" closing midday today.

Cheers

Thanks Simon. I've looked up Motul web page, there are quite a no of brands. Which one do you recommend, the 300V Power ?

BTW. I'm located in the Netherlands so I'm not sure if I can take part of the group buy.

the later "new-age" cars do seem to like a 'lighter' oil (classics would recomend 300V 15w50), the 300V 5w40, as above, would be normal suggestion or something like the Millers 10w60 for trackday type usage..................

supplied all over the world so no probs with Europe.............

Thanks for all your responses. Next week I have appointment at the garage to have an oilchange, I have 6000 km- at board at the moment and Mobil 1 0w40. Naturally I'd like to put in the best oil I'm driving quite a lot in Germany too, so high speeds(200-230 km/h for longer periods on Optimax), this is why I need the best oil

Use 5w-40 Silkolene or Motul.

Agreed, I have recommendations from Motul, Silkolene and OATS technical departments and 5w-40, 10w-40 or 10w-50 is what they say.

For trackday type usage, these oils if proper synthetics are perfectly suitable as they are thermally stable and capable of handling temperatures of up to 130 degC plus without a problem. The point here is it's not the viscosity but the basestocks that matter as these are what gives the oil its resistance to temperatures and "shear" or thinning down.

A keen trackday specialist should use an ester based 5w-40 for better bhp and power delivery as this will give less oil drag and cool the engine better than a thicker oil.

Motul who have had great success with the Subaru WR Team recommend 5w-40 in all post 94 cars with 10w-40 as a second option.

I personally would take their and Silkolenes advice with regards to the correct oils to use.

Cheers
Simon
