Question 3 weeks old...and no oil!

hmm i've had my 04WRX about 3 weeks now... it had done 4500 when i bought it... and was services when i picked her up.... checked oil today for the first time....hmm.... seems to have not a drop in it now...

its not on a competely flat surface...and its been sitting there for 1.5 hours... i've done 1000 miles

So my question is.....shud it be using that much oil?? I'm not really a boy racer kind of driver so thought it would be a bit less oilk thirsty!! Help!

i shud prolly search on oil consumption,

Not unless there's a massive oil leak!

If I were you I'd phone the dealership where you had it serviced and not drive it until you're sure it's ok. You should also find out what oil they've alegedly put in it before you top it up (if you need to) to avoid mixing the types.

Hope it's ok!

He said it's not on "completely level ground" - must be at a pretty steep angle for the dip stick to show empty!

I've already pestered them.... they warned me not to over fill it, and to use Shell Helix something or the other...

as I say..its not on a steep hill, and seems complettely empty!

Go for peace of mind over worrying about pestering them - if it goes bang then you're the one who's going to have the hassle (maybe not financially if under warranty - but it's still a pain in the ar*e to get it sorted out). Just take the car round there and ask them to look at it for you. I don't think that's unreasonable, especially as you say the dip stick is showing empty after only a thousand miles - and it will only take someone a minute to check it themselves. They should be more than happy to have a quick look, and if they get funny with you, perhaps this is an indication of how helpful they're likey to be if something really serious goes wrong.

I've had bad experiences with dealerships - who seem to put 40 miles on the clock whenever I took my P1 in, and did a thouroughly sub-standard job. I've been to both TSL and Roger Clark, and they are genuinely nice and patient guys as they're enthusiasts and understand that not only are you going to worry about your pride and joy, but you want to understand a bit about how it actually works - and if they patronise you you're happy to go somewhere else!

Since its a New to You car, nearly new anyway ( 4500 miles, MY04 ) and supposedly serviced before you bought it, you should go back to dealer and get them to check it, and report to you in writing for your records / warranty. See Trading Standards and / or citizens advice if the dealer won't oblige here.

Shell Helix .. not really man enough for a turbo scooby ... IIRC.

Oil should be between top hole and top notch when cold ( top mark is full when hot, next mark down is full when cold, assuming new age cars are same as classics here ).

Mobil 1 Motorsport, Motul 300, Castrol RS 10-60 etc. are often recommended.
Any good fully synthetic oil, rated 10 - 50, 10-60 ish is usual recommendation - avoid 0-30, etc. oils as too thin it is said.

When you see NO oil on the dipstick, it means you are 2 pints plus down, not totally empty! Of course, it COULD mean no oil, but I doubt the car would get too far with no oil at all, or even only 1/4 of the proper amount. Expecially on so low mileage / young car.

For info, My MY94 wagon on 300 bhp 81000 miles uses less than 1/2 a pint in 3000 miles.

disagree there with the oil level it should be ideally 1/2 to 3/4 quaters full so that when the oil is hot the level is on the top hole.

Sorry, I was not clear there, I meant on top mark ( hole or notch, I forgot! ) hole when hot, on next lower mark ( notch ) when cold.
May have got my hole and notch mixed up.

Picked this thread up when searching for oil-related threads : assume all ok now ?
I've noticed that it can be tricky to identify oil level if the oil is nice and clean as opposed to being black so maybe the level was fine but the oil was a nice light colour ?

Mine is the same (MY01), I opened the oil filler cap and couldnt see any oil, none at all.

It was on a completely flat surface too, checked it with my spirit level......

Never had an oil consumption problem with either of my scoobs and i have driven them quite quickly over long distances also
New car hasnt used one bit of oil from new (now at not much under 9k on the clock) serviced at 1k and 5k, run in properly and a little more always warmed up (5miles plus) and run down.
Some of you must be doing something wrong as i push my car quite a bit (though with over 330lbs of torque you dont need to rag though the gears as much )

Tony I do just the same as you and still loose some oil, had the car from new etc etc, I ve been told from several garages this seems far more common on the new age cars - think the major porblem is that there is so little difference between top hole and bottom it gets a bit scary sometimes, is this something to do with the angle of the dip stick

This question was asked on here about a year or so ago.Just about the time that I was about to buy my new-age car.

IIRC,some cars were using quite a lot of oil from new but this decreased as the vehicle did more miles.

However,I was at a Dutch Subaru specialist last week and he asked me 'if mine used a lot of oil or not?'

I told him 'no,none at all',but apparently hes had quite a few problems with new Subarus using oil...

...He had no definitive answer as to why,but he was convinced that it was down to different production lines/runs in Japan coupled with differing grades of manufacturing quality, materials and components sometimes fitted

nb,as far as I'm aware, this was just his opinion.I don't think that he had any proof that this was the case.
