I had this happen once on my 03WRX. Disconnected the battery for 10 secs and it was ok. I think it was the imobilizer playing up.
Unless you have had an inpact the fuel cut should be ok?

ive got a 93 where the pump did just this, no warning nothing.
check for 12v at the pump connector as the ignition is turned on(from memory it primes the fuel system for about 3 seconds-cant remember if its live during cranking but someone will)
no volts= more testing needed around loom
12v=new pump needed 15 minute swap sorted
richie

Just to echo the above really, happened to me about two weeks ago, one small misfire on a journey (barely noticable) next morning the car won't start!! Thought the fuel pump or crank sensor had gone, but turned out to be the immobilizer feed to the fuel pump!!

Sorted it out, checked all wires everything seemed ok, thought must be fuel pump took it out dried and cleaned it put 12 volt through it works like a good un. Put it all back together fed the pump with temperary live fired up no problem then checked it connected as normal runs no problem. So the good thing is car is running again, bad thing don,t know what was wrong.
Ps Thanks for all your help .
