Default ECU information (early JDM and UK cars)

Following is a quote from Scott T:

Boost Targets & Fuel-Cut Limits
WRX/STi Saloon ECU's 2C, U8, W6, W9 - As above, 11.47psi held to redline. Fuel-cut 14.57psi

WRX (1995/96) ECU Z4 - 12.71psi, dropping to 11.78psi @ 6600rpm. Fuel-cut 15.65psi.

UK/Aus/Euro ECU's V7, 7D and 6D - 11.47psi, dropping to 9.47psi at 6600rpm. With Fuel-cut @ 14.87psi

UK Prodive ECU - 13.33psi (peaks to 13.64 @ 5600rpm, drops to 12.71psi @ 6600rpm). Fuel-Cut 15.65psi.

STi RA (1996) ECU 7K - 13.17psi (peaks to 13.64psi @ 5800rpm). Fuel-Cut 15.96psi.

WRX Wagon ECU V9 - 10.55psi dropping to 6.84psi (starts to drop @ 5000rpm). Fuel-Cut 13.79psi

Z4 and UK Prodrive map are near identicle, with the Prodrive Map running slightly more boost.

IMHO the Z4 ECU is the best stock WRX ECU you can get, as it has much tidier fuel and igntion maps. Comparing it to the earlier ECU's I'm suprised the earlier cars run at all.....

A Z4 ECU will also run fine in a UK and give near UK PPP performance.

yeah perhaps, but it'll get there quicker and you won't lose your license so quickly.

Besides, it's fairly easy to get a speed restrictor removed isn't it?

not sure how you would go about it as the uk cars run an electronic speedo as appose the cable driven one on the wrx.

Could be a problem. Anyway the information is useful for those people changing their ECU's (those with JDM cars) and/or those considering chips etc.

Is a z4 ecu okay to put into a 1995 wagon?. Only reason I ask is becasue of the wagon's different blower (TD04).

For a WRX Wagon - not without some form of boost control as the Z4 has a boost map/solenoid duty map for the TD05 therefore overboost will be problematic due to the TD04 spool characteristics and different compressor map But for a UK Wagon with the TD05 std the ECU would be fine

Cheers

Hi Mate,

Well useful this is, I am currently looking into getting my JDM MY93 WRX and was wondering what would be the best (Cheapest) was to go as far as ECU's etc. I have read a little about the Z4 (My current ECU is a W6). Is this an option for me. My main concern of course is getting the correct fuel map so my car will run safely on UK Optimax. Would the Z4 do this. I am not too fussed at the moment about running higher boost etc just want to make sure my Engine does'nt go *BANG*.

Are the Z4 ecu's hard to get and what sort of money would I expect to pay for one.

Cheers In Advance..

Regards

Chris

I have MY95 Uk car and I am just starting to look into mapping/changing ecu options.

I do have one initial question, How do you Identify the currently fitted ECU is it as simple as looking on the case for the V# or Z# numbers.

Many thanks

Anthony

Hi Mate,

Lift the carpet from the passenger side footwell, remove the steel plate by undoing the 10mm nuts then read the big sticker thats on the ECU, should have somnething along the lines of W6 etc.

HTH

All early UK and JDM WRX use a Speedo Cable. I don't think the electronic version came in until the interior revision in late 1998.

All JDM have the speed limiter parameters in the map set to 112mph.
The UK's are set to 315mph (a bit optimistic) with the exception being the PPP ECU which is a JDM Z4 with minor tweeks and 175mph spped limit.

Is it possible to buy the PPP ECU on it's own?

I don't think you can get the PPP for the Pre96 anymore. If you could it would be ECU, Airfilter, Brake Pads and rear silencer.

Currently have a 3B ECU?? in a WRX Wagon, just had a TD05 fitted (will let you know the results tonight!) but cannot get hold of a Z4 anywhere. API said that they have seen one and that was a few months ago (v rare apparently!) and was wondering if the 7K would do the trick instead??

Cheers

7K runs 13.17psi, Z4 runs 12.7psi
However The 7k Runs leaner with quite a bit more ignition advance then the Z4.

I would apply caution if fitting into a Wagon, as I think the compression ratio's are different, plus the 7K is from an STi 1995/1996 RA, which I believe come with forged pistons plus a whole hose of other mechanicals.

It may be able to run 13.17psi without DET but you won't get much more out of it without DET.

either that or get a VOS chip. VOS chip is redily available.
Using one in my wrx wagon with td04 at mo with no problems. Fitting td05 this weekend. Will let you know how it runs.
Agree Z4 is a nice safe bet so long as it is used with optimax.

Thanks again Myk,

Got myself a Z4 at a reasonable price (even sweeter that I was in a hurry for an ECU upgrade!!).

dj219957, thought I would need to use OB with Optimax on the Z4 - is it OK with neat Optimax??

That would be a result!!!

Cheers

Z4 should be OK without OB as it uses the same fuel/ignition map as the UK PPP and runs slightly less boost.
