Question is this pinging/det/knock?

Hi,

I have recently had my WRX STi -2003 custom ecutek remap'ed.
The car is standard but for a better flowing exhaust with only one race-cat in the center section.

I have recently started to hear strange noices which I initially interpreted as a damaged turbo but my tuner says that all looks fine on the Delta Dash logs...

The noice I am hearing appears in the midrange 3500-4200 and then goes away or can not be heared at least...
It sounds like gravel being sprayed on metal or simular the sound you hear when the ticking sound when the engine is cooling off.

Is this det I am hearing?

possibly the heat shield, its known to reverb at these rpm. might be loose, just have a look at how tight the bolt are holding it on.

It is definately det mate, the sound you have described is exactly how det sounds.

Good explanation, damaged turbo sound, gravel on metal etc etc... i would either get the map adjusted or raise the octane of the fuel in the car (booster) what fuel are you running?

Sometimes you can hear the boost solenoid clacking away at a high rate when you're mid-range in the rev band and the turbo is whizzing. My understanding is that it does this to prevent "overboost" when you're being light-ish on the gas pedal. Maybe this that you're hearing?

Safest bet though is to get it to a specialist with some det-cans, or get yerself a knock-link.

My best description of what det sounds like is the noise 10 or so very small stones (less than pea sized) would make in an empty coke can when rattled with some vigour...

Hi and Thanks for clearing this out, Strange that my tuner did not recognize this...

Interesting to hear about the octane-booster, I normally have 98RON but I switched to Shell VPower and the det seemed to have vanished, although I am not really sure since I do not want to it to det to much...

How much octance booster do you think is needed to go from 98RON to 100RON and are there differences in quality between one octane-booster brand to another(can you recommend any brand)?

The sound you describe and the fact that it goes away when using higher octane fuel should be good enough an indicator to suppose it is detonation indeed. Where did you get the remap from?

When the car was remapped was there any talk about what fuel you intend to use - seems strange to be remapped without it being a consideration to be honest, as not everyone wants to have to add octane boosters when they fill up.
