Default Gizzmo ECU groupbuy?? - WAGON OWNERS TAKE NOTE!!

Hello All,

Been looking around for an ECU upgrade for a while (it has now become urgent due to a new TD05), and due to the shortage of scoobyecu's (and especially the lack of maps for wagons with the TD04's!!) I think I may have found a solution!!

http://www.gizzmoelectronics.com/pro...uupgrades.html

Here are the questions I sent and the answers given:

> I currently own a JDM 1995 WRX Wagon, which i have shipped to the UK and
was wondering how your ECU's performed with the Wagon/TD04 turbo
combination, as there a few re-mappers here in England that seem to be
having real problems getting any maps to work correctly on these vehicles.

Perfectly, which is why we have sold so many to the UK.

>
> Also, I have a full de-cat exhaust system, would this be taken into
account with the new ECU?? (do not want to have more overboost problems!!)

Our upgrade relies on an ancillary boost controller to regulate boost and we
recommend no more than 15lb due to fuelling limitations e.g. Injectors
and/or fuel rail

>
> Lastly, does the chip need to be soldered directly onto the ECU board or
is a socket supplied (as per all >1996 cars) for fitting?

We supply the board and socket of which is 32pin and needs to be soldered to
the board

Then:

> Further to my previous e-mail relating to the Gizzmo ECU for my 1995 JDM WRX Wagon. I have
just acquired a TD05 turbo unit which I am having fitted in the next week or
so and was wondering if I could fit the Gizzmo ECU directly into my current
ECU, or would I first need to upgrade the current ECU for a Z4 or similar
(to account for the uprated turbo)??

The present ECU should be fine
>
>
> I presume that as I cannot actually bring my car to you for a custom map
(I am located in the UK), if I provide details of my current set up a
tweaked map could be provided??

It will allow us to better locate a map from our database

>
> I also noted that the ECU you provide will remove the speed limiter on Jap
cars, I currently have a mechanical device that does this, how will this
impact the way the ECU works - could that part of the map be removed or
would I need to remove the device I currently have fitted??

I doubt this will have any effect
>
>
>
> How long would it take to send out the chip once ordered, and do you know
the likely delivery time to the UK?
>
Approx 10days via NZ Air ($15NZ) or approx 3days via DHL ($80NZ) or similar
>

>
> Lastly (sorry there are so many questions!!), there are quite a few people
here in the UK that are after a piggyback ECU for their Jap Wagons (there
was 15 at the last count that were desperate to get their hands on one). If
I were to organise a group buy on the Scoobynet forum, would there be any
chance of price reductions? If so, how many takers would we need for how
much of a reduction?? (mine would not be included in this, as I need this
quite quickly!!)
>
If you are meaning that they are wanting ECU upgrades, we could knock off
20% should we have an order of 10 or more, for 5 to 10 we can do only 10%,

Well guys, I am ordering one for myself today (call me the guinea pig!!!), so will let you know the results after the weekend. Would anybody else be interested, if so I will organise a groupbuy (dependent on numbers!):

Prices would be roughly:

5-10 people/chips
£153.50 - including postage (10 days)
£178 - including postage (3 days)

10-20 people/chips
£137.50 - including postage (10 days)
£162 - including postage (3 days)

Thought this was quite reasonable, anyway register your interest here!

Cheers

Roly

*added*

Just found out that they also offer a choice of maps - road or race types?!?!

Here is the thread on Subclub:

http://www.clubsub.org.nz/postt5718.html

Will find out some additional info on this one!!!

"We supply the board and socket of which is 32pin and needs to be soldered to

- a bit strange as the socket on the subaru ECU is 28-pin?

You forgot to ask if the Check Engine light is a permenant feature, as it appears to be on some other cars running a Gizzmo.

If you are running a TD05 in a wagon then why not use a TD05 ECU i.e any ECU from a saloon.

The boost control can be made to work on a TD04 using the standard boost control solenoid (I know, cause I've done it). Using a Dawes defeats the object of getting the ECU remapped in some respects.

Scott
I thought a dawes device when combined with a chip like the Gizzmo or ScoobyECU gave more accurate boost control??

Will send them another e-mail later tonight asking about the number of pins on the socket (believe should be 28 not 32!!) and whether this chip causes problems with the CEL light (as the VOS chip from Oz does - thought this was because it was designed for Legacy's though?).

Any other questions anybody would like answers to??

Scott.T, the main reason i wasn't going down the Z4 (etc) route was that I wanted a map for UK fuel (or as close to it as I can get!) and the only other option I have is the scoobyecu, but i have more chance of winning the lottery than getting my hands on one of those!!

Question

I have a couple of questions:

1. Is the fuel cut limit raised? and if so to what, Or is it just removed completely?? Also what is the target boost setting for the various maps..eg WRX95 saloon!!

2. When sending the ECU out to buyers is there a instruction manual for fitment? Does the J1 resisitor need cutting like the ScoobyECU?? More details please!

3. When can we have em.......???? Hopefully would like one within 3 weeks as I have a RR day booked.

Cheers

Swedish Wagon is the same as the saloon and uses a TD05. You will also probably find that the ECU already has the socket soldered into the board.

Any UK based map would suite the Swedish variant. I think your ECU will be a 6D.

Sorry guys, no news from Gizzmo yet, hopefully later tonight once NZ opens!!

Was waiting until all questions had been answered before moving it to groupbuys.

design4cars, will not be problem getting one to you in Sweden, I am hoping that everybody involved will be able to place their own orders (I haven't got the money to front for everybody who wants them!!) and then they can be sent direct to you (rather than me acting as a post office!!), but will obviously arrange this with Gizzmo first!! More of an organised group discount than group buy!!

Will hopefully post more info later.

In the meantime, can somebody let me know if the 7K ECU is a Japanese one or UK (in respect of fueling mainly)??

many thanks

7K is STi RA 1995/1996 and already had the socket on the board ready for the chip.

Hi guys, i contacted gizzmo about 4wks ago and they told me that they wasnt sure if the cel light would come on, and that the socket would have to be a 32 pin for the gizzmo to fit(mines got a 28 pin)????? now i have ordered a vos chip due to lack of soobyecu's.I know you guys want gizzmos because you have wagons but will they fit because i understand these have 28 pin sockets aswell?

Hello guys,

Just had a response from Gizzmo, questions and answers:

> Does the CEL light stay on once the chip is fitted, as we know about this
problem on the VOS chips from Oz?
>
We have sold several (about 12) ECU upgrades to the UK and heard nothing
about a CEL light to date. Some of these have been sent to Peter at PTS
(Performance Turbo Systems) who seem very happy to date.
>
>
> You mentioned in your previous e-mail that the socket supplied has 32
pins, but I understand some ECU's have only 28 pins, do you also supply a 28
pin socket?
Everything accept tools are supplied, this means fitting instructions,
socket, upgrade board, tamperproof stickers, Gizzmo Racing sticker, Genuine
Gizzmo ECU sticker. The socket is 28pin as you say, my mistake.
>
>
>
> Is the fuel cut limit raised (and to what?) or is it removed completely?
It is Removed completely
>
>
>
> What is the target boost setting?
We recommend an ancillary boost controller due to turbo and wastegate
variations, this is not programmed.
>
>
>
> Will there be an instruction manual for fitting the chip? And will the J1
resistor wire need cutting to enable the chip?
> Yes
>
>
> Sorry for so many questions mate, but lastly, can the groupbuyers order
individually, and have the items sent directly to them, as I am not a bank
or a post office!! (and we even have one person in Sweden very interested!).
Certainly would make life a lot easier for me.
That is not a problem, however, we can not offer a discount without a volume
order, so everyone would have to order at the same time in order for us to
process the discounted payments at the same time

A couple of things really, anybody know Peter at PTS
(Performance Turbo Systems)?? Also, the twelve chips supplied to the UK, he doesn't mention if they were for scoobies or others marques!?

Still looks good though, seems very professional.

Am going to look at the NZ Scoob forums for more info.

Nice one!!

Sounds good.....I know from reading the MLR that they say the same that you need an auxillary boost controller to up the boost, otherwise it will just remain as the car is now, but the map is far more aggressive on fuelling and ignition advance so you can raise the boost safely, for example on a MY95 WRX saloon with a TD05 to 16-17 psi no problems just like the ScoobyECU does.

So with this chip, it will allow you to run standard boost and then uprated if you have an EBC!!

With regards to the Group Buy discount...I think its usual for someone to gather the cheques/money then send it to Gizzmo in one lump with a list of what chips are required and which address's they need sent to...I am willing to help out if needed.

Cheers John

No fuel-Cut......nice
Un-modified boost control......nice
But you do get lots of stickers for the ECU

To be honest guy's you may be better off seeing how much boost you can get with a Dawes running the standard map.

The boost control of the standard map tails off the boost a great deal from the mid-range through to redline. Fitting a Dawes of a.n.other boost controller (such as this one for £17 http://www.twosrus.co.uk/product_inf...products_id=63) will stop this and you should be able to run near to the 13.8psi fuel cut rather then the 10psi peak, dropping to 5psi at 6200rpm.

I dont see why they dont run boost control on the ECU and totally eliminate the fuel cut?

Question

I am no expert my any means but this is my take on it...

I can see your point about having no fuel cut(but with decent boost control this shouldn't be an issue should it???).....but with the boost mapping surely they left it like that so the user has more choice on what boost he/she will run.

If I am right in thinking the ScoobyECU and other chips map the boost higher and then if the user wants to use a lower, or stock boost they either have to solder in a switch to go back to the standard map, therefore going back to a map for 100-102 RON fuel instead of the 97 RON this chip is mapped for???? Whereas with the Gizzmo you can run an electronic boost controller to set the boost as you wish.....I think they specify a maximum safe boost to run with the chip......?

Comments welcome as I would like an aftermarket chip that is safe and also reliable.........

you can still set the fuel-cut to 17.5psi, so why remove it ?
The boost control can be quite tricky to get right especially on the TD04 Wagon.

One of the other comments above quoted how it was a more aggresive fuel & ignition map. Hopefully 'aggressive' doesn't mean leaner with more ignition advance + extra boost from the MBC. This 'will' = DET

More fuel does not equal more power
More ignition equals more power, until the onset of DET

The fuel is only there to ignite and cool.

More air also equals more power, hence why a leaner mixture gives more power. But leaner also increases the chance of DET.

Basically if you can run without DET on a stock or MBC controlled ECU then the 100/102 & 97/98RON argument falls flat.

No idea mate.......??? Maybe a question to ask em.....
Fair point.......all I know is when my 95 WRX saloon was RR'd it maintained a constaint 13psi all the way to the limiter so I am not so worried myself....but again maybe a question to ask

From reading the NZ Scooby forum and varoius stuff on the early EVO's there seems to be lots of peeps down-under running this chip with no problems so the "aggressive" map can't be bad.....otherwise the power of the people would be stating otherwise....as is common on here if a product is rubbish!!!

As you say, when trying to get more power then changing the parameters of the ignition to a more advanced state increass the chance of DET....but if they have it sorted with the fuelling correctly then all should be well....as long as they are not right up to the limit........

I have a RR booked for 3 weeks so maybe if we get them sorted before that I can provide sum info on how they are mapped......???

Cheers for the info and comments Scott........defo some points to think about, and find more info on.......best to have every question asked before people hand over there hard earned

I not trying to put the mockers on it, but am a bit concerned for you guys when things are not quite what they should be i.e relating to the confusion between 32 pin and 28 pin, no fuel cut and no boost control.

Basically all it is changing it the fuel and ignition map. And to be honest these are the hardest 2 to get right (speaking as an Ex ScoobyECU/ScubaChip<96 supplier).

If all you want to do is change the fuel and ignition map, just get a Blitz/HKS/Greddy Fuel/AFR controller then you can set it exactly where you want it.
Do the rest with a £17 MBC & FCD.

Default Gizzmo Chip Pics

Hi All,
I have some pics of the ECU with and without a Gizzmo Chip installed. If anyone would like me to send them these pics please email me.
I installed the chip in my vehicle probably about 2 weeks back and had a few issues...
Firstly, my spark plug gap was set to 0.8mm and I had issues... when I turned up the boost my engine seemed to cut off ??? I then set this to 1.1mm this made it worst. Now I have my gap at 0.6mm and all is fine up to 16PSI... I have not turned my boost controller higher than that.
Secondly... make sure that all the airhoses are fine - well connected and with no leaks.
I have a MY96 Sti V2 Passion Wagon

Hi Sanman

Can I please have sum pics.....send em to my addy blacky555uk@yahoo.co.uk

Few questions..with regards to your mis-fire issue.......how old are your plugs?? and also did you check to see whether your Coil-packs are okay??, as running higher boost puts more load on them and that can coz the mis-fire...also are the plugs the standard spec ones or colder grade ones to cope with the extra boost???

How easy was the install of the chip??

Cheers

Logan

I didn't think you were mate...I realise your fairly knowledgable in this subject, thats why I am putting these questions up....just trying to find out as much as I can on the subject before I invest.....

Basically all it is changing it the fuel and ignition map. And to be honest these are the hardest 2 to get right (speaking as an Ex ScoobyECU/ScubaChip<96 supplier).

Well if it is hard, then its best to let a company that have done the R&D on it do it than me getting a AFR controller then isn't it??? As I wouldn't know how to set one up....so would have to take it somewhere to get it tuned!!

If all you want to do is change the fuel and ignition map, just get a Blitz/HKS/Greddy Fuel/AFR controller then you can set it exactly where you want it.
Do the rest with a £17 MBC & FCD.
This would work out much more expensive than this chip tho wouldn't it??? A AFR is over 200 quid....then the price of install(if you can't do it yourself) and the set up costs???

I also have a Gizzmo chip fitted to my 95 sti ra V2 and have had no problems with it whatsoever, just pushed straight in. Had no engine light stay on. The only thing you need is a boost controller to benefit from the chip, as when I first fitted the chip it wouldn't boost past 1 bar (14.5psi) and I removed it after 1 day because it made the car allot slower than standard. So after I email Gizzmo about the poor performance they told me to fit some kind of boost controller to make good use of the chip. I then fitted a blitz duel spec r controller, now boosting 1.24 bar (18psi ) and no problems as yet. It is not a big gain performance plug and play chip because you have to fit it in conjunction with a boost controller, but the main point I bought it was so I can run on 97/98 uk fuel without the worry of DET.
When fitted with a boost controller you WILL enjoy :-)
Nick.
