Default Bigger Turbo or Headers ?

Hi,

Thinking more long term here (need to save the dosh);

Which would be the better mod ?

Headers + Tek3
or
Bigger Turbo + Tek3

I currently have a MY02 STI PPP.

Any advice/comments welcome

Easy - Bigger Turbo everytime

Only consider aftermarket headers when You've done most other things....... I got over 400bhp on std headers with my car.......

A good option is the bigger Turbo and ported std headers........... Harvey Smith apparently does a Brilliant job of the std headers so I'm told - he must be retired!!

Your factory turbo is quite nice for a 2.0. Try a few cars of similar weight with turbos you are interested in. Try them on a very twisty road if possible with lots of 2nd and 3rd gear work.

OK. Would ultimately like to have around 360 bhp and matching torque. (maybe a little more). I'm not after a 400+ monster machine

Have been told by one reputable company that turbo will definately need changing if I'm after 320+

So in order to achieve my goal, what turbo would be recommended. Who would I buy it from and how much should I budget.

Firstly what does btt mean?
And secondly, i have a MY03 WRX, which Dyno's at 266 bhp. So, i think i know i need a bigger intercooler and turbo to get past 300 bhp, but, i have also been told i would need different injectors i think it was, why is this? I know the intercooler and turbo need doing i have seen that many times on different webbys but why the injectors?
Or was it headers? I dunno, sorry guys i dont know the lingo.

btt(back to the top)

to make more power you need to deliver more fuel to the engine, the standard injectors may not be able to give the required fuel for the power you want.

The MY03 must have 440's as standard. These will be good for up to about 340bhp at the right pressure.

With the right turbo you could make 300bhp on the standard intercooler. However with that same turbo you could make 300bhp at lower boost with a bigger intercooler, which is better for the engine.

Mark, as John says, that's a nice turbo. Are you prepared for what you'll loose by changing to a bigger one? You could always go for one one of the twin scroll turbo's which should be good for that sort power. However it would mean changing the headers at the same time to the oem twin scroll headers.

It'll be expensive, but if I was doing the same thing again It would be the route I'd take.

Dave
