I'd put money on it being the rocker gasket, this drips onto the exhaust just under the turbo, hence the burning smell in that area!!

I've been having this problem with leaking cam covers. The oil drips on to the headers overnight and then smokes as the exhaust warms up when it's next used. If you go for a decent run and don't hit traffic or stop you don't notice it, as it gets blown away. Pop to the shops and it stinks.

Oh and take it to someone who knows what they're doing, not like I did and entrust it to a bunch of muppets. Could have lost the engine when the half moon fell out and dumped oil all over the exhaust and road.

My moneys on the rocker cover as well-mine was replaced a couple of months ago by Jap Innovations for £100.00 or so with labour and the gasket.

i have an 03wrx. i put an HKS exhaust on with a downpipe, this removed all the cats. when i go on a run and stop at lights or junctions it starts to chuck out loads of smoke but its fine when its moving. Does this sound like your problem Houghton? still not found out what it is, triangle (subaru dealer) in chesterfield said that sometimes exhausts have oil inside them?

Them rocker covers especially turbo side come in from an awful lot of heat......no surprise they leak after a while......

Hi Rich,

If the smoke's coming out from under bonnet, that's the symptom I'm getting and in my case it's the cam cover gaskets. If the exhaust has oil 'inside' it, I'd have thought it would then appear from the tail pipe and not even be noticed. There may have been a small oil residue on the exhaust but that would soon burn off.

Hope that helps
