buying a modded sti.
Hi Folks,
My mate is thinking of buying a highly modded 1996 sti RA, which has apparantly 340bhp, i have a well modded u.k turbo but i don't know much about the japanese imports. I have told him to be very carefull and to make sure if it hasn't been remapped, that it has been run with booster and also a knocklink fitted. He has had a look at it once and the guy didn't even tell him it is an import, or to run it on optimax and booster. To reach that figure i guess it must have something done to the e.cu. Does anyone know what the reputable maps are for this type of scooby?
Just wondered if anyone could give a little more advise, and by the way this motor is up for £9000 sounds a bit much to me.
Thanks for any help.
James.

This car would need some form of different ecu to achieve 340bhp.
Your looking at what? a 96 275ps car? then going up 65bhp....
Personally if the guy doesnt even give you decent advice about the car id walk away, and especially if you dont know whats been done to it.....

If your looking for something decent though have a look here at the STi2 tuned wagon, it has all the paperwork, could be worth looking at (even though its a wagon )
Sold my last car here and got finance on my new one (look in previous stock/sold, its the sonic blue w reg PPP'd car with 36k on the clock )

Its probably bull**** pub talk and just has a boost controller
On a serious note, buying an STi is a different kettle of fish and it amazes me that people buy them knowing nothing about Subaru's other than their mate Dangerous Dave says the STi is the best
I always think its best to start with a Uk, mod it and get used to it and build up some knowledge, then go for an STi. But most arent that patient
Buying an STi is a minefield, never mind a mooded one. There are a serious amount of well dodgy ones out there, and many are described as RA, Type R, when they are not. Research a great deal, or leave it...

Many Scoobs are modified, some good and some not so.
The seller must be questioned, but all the info/bills/photos should proove the 'quality' of the car.
If he is the real thing, then he will enthuse about the car, what it was like and how it is.
A test drive should not be a Wall-of-Death experience either.
Leave it!
