Default Daft motors.

Just what is the story with you lot and these ridiculously fast and fragile cars? Most of you, I'd be willing to bet, couldn't handle a proper car on a long straight- never mind a twisty road!

Any old clown, even some women for gods sake, can climb aboard a scooby and make it look good on a track or the open road. Gadgets like ABS, 4x4, traction and etc have lured you all into a false sense of security. You all think you are good drivers but it's the car, not you, with the skill.

Do yourself a favour, bin the chipped scooby and purchase a roaring RWD classic, like a BMW2002 or a MK2 RS. With no power steering, ABS or any other poofy bits'n'pieces to do the work for you, I'd be willing to wager that even the professional neds amongst you would enjoy yourself!

Go on, make the change! The sound of a couple of snorty webers trying to suck the bonnet from its hinges, and a rasping exhaust tone as you power through the countryside, is much better on the lugs than 5,000,000bhp scooby in a car park burn out!

Go on my son, you know it makes sense!

Beemer, you take me back a few years!
Working from nearly the last paragraph up:
Had my 1973 911 on tripple webbers, open exhaust and ran it for 3000 miles a year, scared me as much as others.
That old 911 had no ABS, no PAS, no servo on the brakes, you needed strong legs to survive the day. I'm no professional driver, but it made me feel good and I raced it too.
Problem is it wasn't particularly fast. A hike to 230 bhp, fuel injection (can't get webbers anymore) helped, but- The older I am the faster I was comes to mind.
So, what to do? The others racing against me started to arrive in Evo's, Nissans and Subarus, blew my doors off (that phrase dates me) and i had a choice. Move on or get out.
Couldn't afford or think of a car with 450 bhp and 1.25 tonne that is a saloon other than the Jap cars...so an Impreza it was.
Went quicker, safer, and had more fun. 4X4? Great in the wet when racing, not much advantage in the dry, ABS, has a Scooby got it? Mine never works.

Does it make me a better driver? Yes, makes up for my cr*p driving skills.

Last year raced that old 911 for the last time, Jesus what a car, lots of thrills (sideways in a 911 might be thrilling?), but was 3 seconds slower than the Scooby.

So, the 911 now is fully road going, the rasp of that open piped engine...hard to describe, but what a scarey car on today's roads (or track).

I'm very happy with both worlds, the one you say is for real men, and the faster, sensible and faster Scooby. I am very lucky.
Shouldn't forget the great involvement from being on this Scooby net either, great bunch of people, you must agree?

Good point mate.. not all scoob owners are the same..

a couple of points..

What do you class as a proper car?

"ABS, 4x4, traction and etc" mine doesnt have ABS.. yeah it is AWD, so? traction? Doesnt have traction control.. it does have grip though.. but not much

'Chipped Scooby' Despite popular belief you can 'chip' most scoobies.. superchip might think they can, but they cant.

2002 BMW no power steering or ABS??

I hear this kind off 'perpective' at many hill climbs from mainly the Escort Mkll guys.
I thought there would be a bit of sport here, but really not a lot is gained other than a lot of clever Smily Faces!

My normal answer, rather than the one I first posted, is for the person to get THE car, with webbers etc, get a race licence, helmet/overalls and enter a Santa Pod meeting.
Drag racing is not easy.
If that does not satisfy, try hill climbing, (drag racing with tight bends)

Then reality will hit home.

A (dangerous) dash down a public road to prove a point is suspect. Knowing that nothing is in your way, that a result depends purely on your skills to build a competant car and to be a competant driver, on a race track, now then, that will prove a point!

Fed-up with this now, want to read about something Technical please.

Yes, that is a great smile!
how do you all do that. You spend too much time on pc's!
Alpine A110 (S?) What a fab motor. Engine in the right place (911) no weight in the front = killer steering finese(911), no power brakes (911), tons of real character (911)
Real cars, but bloody hell soooo hard to drive quickly.
Anyway, where is the Beeemmmeer kid?

Gone to get his race licence do you think?

It's horses for courses. I'd far rather drive the scoob to work on a Monday than a stripped out 911. I'd be happy to let my mum drive the scoob in the wet, but as my friend proved recently when his mum ran his M5 down to the shops, and "dinked" a kerb by getting on the powre too early on a wet roundabout, I'd feel a lot more nervous in that.

Scoobs are competant, fun, fairly safe, easy to drive, can be fast, can be tuned to a decent power output and can be bought cheaply. Yeah I could buy a Beemer, but I'd still have to modify it, becuase occasionally I'd need to indicate.

''Stripped out 911'' Youv'e seen my car then!
As I said, so hard to drive on the track, and very demanding on the road, especially the brakes.
This is why i went to a Scooby but kept the 911 (wife wouldn't let me sell it). I've had the old 911 for 16 years now so it is part of the family.

What you actually do is run the scoob as your day car, and keep the classic as your weekend car. Best of both worlds tbh.

If you can afford the petrol that is...

Hey FUZ! You just keep on rockin in that old 02 and keep the fragile scoob under wraps. And that goes for any of you bods with retro racers, they are loads more fun! I'll bet that, just like me, you never tyre (get it, tyre!) on kicking the **** out and slip sliding in the damp. And when she's had enough, the 02's a great getaway smoker for when her old man comes home and catches you on the job! Then again, if he's any sort of a bloke at all, he'll stop and admire your classic vee-hicle giving you just the right amount of time to pull on the strides and leg out the back door!
If, on the other hand, your birds old man comes home and sees a scoob sittin around outside his house, he may well think he's getting burgled and phone the cops!!
Sorry, couldn't resist that one!!
Anyhow, back to reality.
Get yourself a retro classic. They're much more fun and baseball caps aren't standard!
And Hugo, There's bugger all wrong with the TR7! They are a great example of a retro RWD, ripsnorting, one eye up-one eye down motoring icon!
So turn your chair around and get back to work!
I'll admit that the tartan cloth seats are a bit iffy tho'!

Hang on...your mechanically fuel injected Tr7 is LESS fragile than a scoob?
I've owned one, and aside from the rust, mechanical failures were something unbelieveable...on the STANDARD car.

My scoobs is modified and coming up on 200,000 miles!

With that scoob of yours off the road so much gettin sorted, spinning on that chair is about as good as it'll get for you I'm afraid Hugo.
I hear the Daewoo Matiz is decent value, if you fancy an upgrade!!
