Default Speedo Cable?

Hi,

Whilst driving home yesterday - the speedo suddenly went from 70mph to 0mph and stuck there. It's as if the speedo cable has gone. The digital mileometer isn't registering any further miles and is stuck where it stopped.

The car seemed fine, so I assumed it was just the speedo. Then 2 mins later the CHECK ENGINE light comes on. Now it doesn't rev past 4000rpm - it just cuts the engine out - although the engine still runs. I have tried turning the engine off and restarting - the light remains on.

Question - Is this at all related? ie. speedo cable goes - engine management system is looking for a feed - cant find it and is putting it into limp home mode? Or are they two seperate incidents - and my turbo's gone pop or something?

The car is a MY98 wagon - chipped, blitz cone filter, double turbo up-pipe - got 71k miles - full service history on the button. And generally does motorway miles at a steady cruise.

Any pointers gratefully received...

Jim

Hi

Do v4> Imprezas have speedo cables?

It sounds like the speed sensor or perhaps its wiring/connector has failed or come loose. With that gone, the ECU could be running in a "safe" mode?

I don't know where its fitted on Scoobs but generally they're mounted on the differential housing.

Is your car a JDM model? Has it been de-limited? Poor fitting can cause the speed sensor/loom to fail on some imports...

I had a similar problem on my JDM, it turned out to the KPH->MPH converter was goosed.

Worth a look, this only applies to JDMs though.
And yes, if the speedo fails the car goes into limp home mode.

Hi Guys,

Not sure what a JDM model is?

It's a UK car - not de-catted - but with prodrive backbox.

I think it maybe a loose connection - as it went on and off a couple of times on Thursday eve when I last drove the car.

Japanese Domestic Market. So probably wont apply to you. Still worth disconnecting the cable and inspecting it, it's about half a metre long.
