GTB Engine Big End issue

GTB Engine Big End issue
Would appreciate any help that anyone could provide on the following problem.
A friend of mine based in Dublin owns a Subaru Legacy GTB Twin Turbo (Automatic Transmission/ Wagon)
1999 -Japanese Import
VIN BH5 XXXXXX
Applied Model BH5 A5CP
Engine Type EJ20 06DXAKE
Option Code PAC
The big end has failed in the car due to lack of Oil. Engine not opened up yet to examine extent of damage.
He is not going to go for a full rebuild in this case as he is trying to source a New Short Block for this car.
Where is it possible to source same, as Subaru in Ireland are saying they can't get one (it's a whole Grey Import stone wall) ?
If he cant get the original GTB short block will other EJ20 short blocks from Imprezas work ?
What years/vesion of Impreza short blocks match?
Does it have to be Japanese or will a Europaen version work?
He has also been told that an EJ20 Short Block from a 2004 Japanese Spec C Impreza sourced from Powerstation in Cheltenham will work and that compression should not be an issue but that an extra breather needs to be blocked off which is supposedly easily done.
Anybody with experience of this ?
Any differing views to this ?
Once sourced he will then be getting a local rally engine bulider to fit the new short block. The difficulty in Ireland is that there is very limited experience of these cars and particularily not in rebuilds.
