Default Handbrake operate rear discs or drums??

I was just wondering on cars with rear discs (as standard; no rear conversions) what the hand brake acctually operates. I was dusscing this with a mate of mine and he said that the hand brake operates small drums behind the rear discs. is this right?

The brake shoes are inside the dics themselves.you have to slacken them off to remove the dics.

Yes hes right!
The hand brake drum is actually the bell of the rear disc, staring at it at the moment as i try and get this damn hub nut off to do the wheel bearing!
