Question STI 5 Type "R" Servere Engine Knocking

Can any body offer me any technical explanation for the following:-

Started car up from cold yesterday morn. Drove car very gently for about 1.5 miles to drop lad at primary school. When pulling away the engine reached approx 2500 rpm and a metalic clanging noise started to come from the engine bay.
The engine did not appear to run lumpy or misfire.
The metallic sounding clanging was very feint at idle but very loud when revved.
Car was then retired to driveway and by transporter lorry taken to garage (Xtreeme Scoobies) for urgent attention.
Early indications are "bottom end" and not a broken piston.
I would love a techy to explain exactly what the likely fault is (If Poss) and what was the probable cause. Also what is involved in repairs.
Are any special STI parts required ?

Thanks guys

Mike

Big end common failure on scoobs....mines just gone....it will probably be cheaper getting a second hand short motor and dropping that in otherwise I think you would need at least a new crank pistons and rods....you will need new oil pump, cooler etc....it all adds up

Usually not that bad m8.

Con ron and pistons probably won't need replacing!

Xtreme will explain that in due course. They're the ones who are stripping your engine so they're the only ones able to comment authoritatively. The rest of us will just be guessing/speaking from experience, experience that may not correlate to your failure.

and what was the probable cause.
Again, a myriad of potential causes, from abuse/incorrect running to incorrect oil change procedure to a failing MAF sensor to simple bad luck to a combination of all the above and more. It would help to know what sort of petrol (and octane booster) you used, and whether or not you had a KnockLink fitted.

Even with a knocklink fitted there is no guarantee all is well, it's scary how much background det can be going on yet the knocklink is just showing 1 or 2 greens
Strangely, this can vary a lot from car to car, on some cars 2 greens at high revs is just normal safe background noise.
