Default intercooler temps

got a custom top mount intercooler fitted but i have no way of telling how much better it is for cooling, remeber when i did a long drive with my sti intercooler on and popped the bonnet the intercooler was hot to touch

did a 20 mile drive yerterday then popped the bonnet and put my hand on the intercooler and it was cold to touch

but what sort of distance do you have to drive etc to find out if the intercooler is going to heat up

Batter it down a B road where you are accelerating and braking hard a lot, the speeds will be low and the loads will be quite high, then pull in quickly and leave the engine running and feel.
