MY02 STi Water Spray - again
Not the hot weather is moving in again, did anyone ever get to the bottom of the is the water spray truly manual or is it automatic.
Is there anyway of altering when the IC sprays ? (say at a specific boost value ?)
Cheers !

I just got a MY53 STi PPP. I don't know how to use the water spray effectively. When do you press the wee button and what difference should I expect? Sorry to hijack your thread but I thought you might know. Ta!

This tells you all about intercooling and water sprays.

I would have to get back with you for the part number but it's a switch the dealer installed and it now automatically switches on when you reach a certain boost (it's adjustable) and I now have to switches: The dash switch was converted to simply turn it on or off (for the winter) and one installed close to the handbrake to opperate it manually at redlights etc (very convenient in trafic in the middle of summer when the the intercooler collects the heat from the turbo). The water tank lasts about 2 to 3 days of normal to rapid driving and about 2 hrs of fast autobahn driving If you're interested let me know and I'll find out the part number from the dealer. I'm sure you can order it in the UK.

Dont quote me on this but i remember someone saying that Mike Wood from Prodrive said that the MY02 STi has an auto mode that kicks in (automatically ) but there not on the MY03/04 cars.

yes I believe it is automatic, but no-one seems to know how it is automatic ?
whether it is boost activated, ECU activated, or temp activated.
I did ask this question over on the ECUTEK forums and drew a blank there too.

OK, just got the definative answer from Mike Wood.
"Mark
The ECU has no way of controlling the waterspray so the easy answer is no. However, the water disappears when you use the car hard so if that the case the answer would be yes.
Our feeling is that it's syponing out of the nozzles under heavy braking so I guess that it's achieving what is needed if you are using the car around a track or similar. The fact still remains that it's not really needed if the car is moving at a reasonable speed in temperatures of less than 40C. The only time I ever use it is when the car has been stationary and warm for any length of time and I need to get the intercooler temp down a s quickly as possible.
Regards
Mike"
So, now we know it's not.
So, how can I make it automatic ?

All I can tell you for right now is that it's an AVO Automatic Water-Spray Kit. I will try to get in touch with my dealer (quite difficult at times) and find out more such as whom to contact, distributor etc....
I highly recommend it. It comes on on boost and you can always hear the pump switch on when accelerating which of course also cools the intercooler for the next acceleration . Under hard acceleration it'll stay on untill you reach your cruising/desired speed and then shut off. Like I said earlier, a tank of water will last about 2 days under normal driving

I'm going to email them for more details.

You can turn the manual water spray into an auto for the price of a pressure switch and a rocker switch, connect the pressure switch across the manual water spray switch so that when it is made by the boost level of choice it triggers just as if you had pressed the switch, the rocker switch in series allows you to enable and disable, as the manual setup is timed then it only needs a pulse to start it off.
very simple and effective.

Talking of the timer - anyone know where is it installed (or the part no.) on an MY03 onwards STi.
I've got hold of a manual button - but as Bob says, it only provides the kick start for the timer.
Failing that, I've seen timer relays on the RS component website. Would these be a substitute to act in the same way as the Subaru timer?

You wire in two wires to the SECS unit (relay positive, relay ground)
The SECS unit energizes the relay when the boost rises above a user set point.
If you go on to PSI3's website there's an Acrobat file you can download called Connections its all detailed in there

Have downloaded the pdf and am reading it now. Finally a solution. A cheap solution, considering I bought my SECS 1004 here on scoobynet for a nice tidy sum.
Jasoon, what psi have you got yours set too to activate the spray ? and how often does the bottle need feeding ?

according to Prodrive the water spray is manual on MY03 STi UK's
from what I read somewhere about spray tank levels going down and people thinking it worked in auto was to do with water getting forced thru the system due to heavy breaking.
If it worked in auto on the PPP Sti's you would need to fill the tank up every day

rav4640,
you need to read this thread properly. The above statement from Prodrive says everything.
