Default MY98 - Loss of power

Hi all,

Driving to work this morning, pulled away from a set of lights on a duel carriageway... carriagway was merging so put my foot down in second gear, watched the revs rise. Strange the car accelerated but nowhere near how it should, even when it came on boost. It doesn't seem to be the clutch slipping (although I think it's on the way out!) as it seemed to pickup again in third. Does anyone know any reasons why the engine would be holding back/hesitant?

Thanks in advance,

Karlos

same car - mine does that occasionally, f*ck knows what causes it - it is almost like there could be slack in the accelerator cable? as you say, change gear and it picks up ok

Heat soak... that's a new one...

The car is standard but for a H&S Downpipe and Backbox, it does it more often than not though, which is worrying. Power loss is immense, christ I even had an XR3i keeping up with me up to third gear this morning

There is a 'mode' in the OEM ECU which will limit boost to around 7-8psi in order to pass drive by noise regulations which are conducted by driving in the manner which you describe.

Andrew, this might explain it, if it weren't for the fact that the car didn't always suffer from this... I suppose I could really do with a boost guage to see if anything's going on in that department

If it were clutch slip then the revs would rise, then drop and rise again this time with acceleration.

Just as if you had dipped you foot on the clutch while driving normally.

i get this quite a lot. it could be anywhere at any time. i have heard that it is bad injector earthing. but i find it strange that it only happens in second gear.

Yeah, it is second gear! Noticed today though, and don't know if it's relevant that when the fuel gauge get's below a quarter full, performance picks up to what it should be. Yes, I know the car is lighter and it's not that. Good it be something to do with the fueling?

if you throw the car about ie coming out of a roundabout sideways with less than quarter of a tank me and all my mates suffer from the problem of fuel starvation. my friends p1 can even get that effect with only half a tank!
