Unhappy RB5 not well since Equal length headers

Posting for a mate, although I have an RB5, but mines faster

Mouse and me both have RB5s that are almost identical in mods. They have been equally matched (surprise surprise) for months.

Mouse decided to have some equal length headers fitted at powerstation and at the same time have a new clutch. I think he had a service at the same time, but not sure.

Since then he can't seem to get proper boost (1.4 bar, I think JB Tek2.5) and the car feels quite flat. Think the Defis are showing 1.2 bar. I since fitted a Dawes device to mine (set to 1.4 bar) and my car feels like lightening. Swapped the Dawes onto Mouses car, and although it feel quicker, it's still not right.

I reckon Mouses MAF is shagged as there a marked difference between fuel consumption on mine and his. And on the rare occasion I'm following him, appears to be a whiteish pale smoke on boost. We've ordered a new MAF.

Can anyone think what the hell could be going on. Powerstation said it could be the map, but it wasn't an issue before the headers were fitted. I can try my ECU or a PPP ECU, but really don't think it is that ???

Thanks in advance Phill

PS It wouldn't be the boost solenoid would it ?

Did he have the car remapped after having the headers fitted ?

Indeed, try another MAF, but really the car would benefit from a remap with headers. 1.4 bar is also rather high for a TMIC and above fuel cut Stick to 1.25 bar absolute max for reliability IMHO.

Well the MAF has been ordered and should be here today. I know the Defis read a little higher than actual plus the Dawes came off my car. Had no issues todate running 1.4 bar (max over course of few weeks, but usually 1.25 ish) and monitoring it with the knocklink and AFM.

As for Mouses car, no it hasn't been remapped. I thought the car would benefit from the headers anyway without a remap. I did tell him to go and see Bob R.

My car return 248 BHP and 244 Lb torque last time it went to PS. Mouses returned less than 230 BHO and 230 Torque on a different date Lol, that was worth spending £1500 for less power

My car feels much faster and pulls harder. Mouse car seems really flat

Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

Just changed the MAF on Mouses car and to be honest although the car feels a little quicker, and the idle seems a lot smoother, it doesn't pull as hard as mine does. The car definately runs smoother with the new MAF. It's hitting 1.2 bar with JB map and standard restrictor fitted. Mine is hitting 1.3 bar with same ECU map and a Dawes.

Took mine out immediately after and mine was wheel spinning whereas Mouses still felt a little flat.

Has anyone got any ideas ? I did notice a little oil residue on the inlet manifold nipple, would this be anything ?

Mouse reckons mine wheels spins due to having 16 inch wheels on at the moment.

Thanks in advance, Phill

PS Do we need to renew the Lambda sensor now ?

I had a similar thing happen when I fitted GruppeS headers, although my setup is quite different to your cars the effect was the same, felt flat, wasn't pulling as much boost etc.

With mine I found that the wastegate was blowing open and I had to pretension the actuator to make it hold boost better, it was also running richer for some reason so I leaned it out a little and gained (according to Dataloglab) about 30lb/ft peak torque at 200 RPM less than with the OEM headers.

Power delivery feels far more 'linear' than before but it is definitely quicker.

UK MY98 TD05/Hybrid FMIC/Gruppe-S Headers/H&S Uppipe/MBC/Link ECU.

So does anyone think that could be what's going on with Mouses car ? And why would having the headers cause the wastegate not to shut properly ? Is the wastegate adjustable ?

Thanks Phill

Personally I'd look to get the car mapped& put some pretension on the actuator, though I would like to get a laptop on the car to see what is really happening

John Banks did the remap based on the original TEK 2.75 postal (oh no here we go again) I reckon Bob Rawle should do a custom map for Mouse, but not sure how much this will cost ?

I will put the car on delta dash tomorrow, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for.

How do we put some pretension on the actuator ? Is it easy ?

XtremeScoobies,

MAF has made loads of difference to the smoothness and running cost (i reckon) so thanks very much

remove heat shield to tighten actuator arm.

you could just use a fuel pressure regulator to adust fuelling for now and save the remap for a bigger turbo

How much should I tighten the actuator arm ?

A fuel presure regulator, to adjust fueling ???? Why would I want to do that ??

I have a TD05, would that be better after Andy F has rebuilt it ??

Thanks Phill

PS Reset the ECU and although quicker, it's still flat compared to mine

When I fitted Gruppe-S headers and up-pipe to mine, I had to go back to BRD to have the map 'tweaked' as it changes the Volumetric Effeciency of the engine apparently! (no, I haven't got a clue what that is either )
