I'm in the same situation as yourself 95WRX and my car runs fine without any additives. My mates is a MY93 WRX with 95000 on the clock and he's done 30000 miles in it and runs fine, but alot of people on here will advise you to use octane booster as everyones opinion varies.

Fit a knocklink before running without booster - then make the assumption its running ok if it doesnt light up.
I got mine and fitted knocklink it only takes half a tank on 98 RON before it shows det in 4th. Bear in mind that with a JDM WRX you are losing power running on low octane fuel as its used to 100+.
Note that im saying 98 ron, you are using 97 which is worse for the engine.
Running it with booster I dont even get a yellow flash - the potential problem is that it will run fine even for 30k. But the stress will build up eventually causing failure somewhere.
IMHO run octane booster every 2nd tank - then again some people seem to experience no problems, all I know is that im happy running booster and being safe.
These cars are simply not set up for 97/98 RON fuel and for little investment a re-map or scoobyecu when it becomes available protects your investment.
Im sure other will have opinions but compare these prices to an engine rebuild
Knocklink and sensor - circa £140
Scoobyecu - circa £150 ish (depending)
Grand total for peace of mind £290 VS £2000 plus for a blown engine.
Add value of peace of mind and no paranoia !!
Hope this helps

I didnt used to have to run it every tank until the boost valve was taken off...even without booster it never knocked, but to be careful I ran it through every 2nd tank or less just depending how long the car had been sitting.
Especially if for instance it sat for a week without a run because I hear that opti can de-grade over a week.
Since I took the valve off, knock appeared almost straight away, so now its in it every second and I even have a spare bottle in the car in case I get caught short
Should of made that clear apologies anyway doesnt remove my recommendation that booster must be used unless you get a re-map...which I am getting soon anyway
