hi all,

i'm having a bit of trouble at the moment with wheel rear bearings.

basically last year during the summer i had to replace the rear bearings because they were worn out. fair enough this is a MY93.

the problem i had was that i couldnt get the bearings. my car is a MY93 1.6 jap import and everywhere i went, no one could get replacement bearings. due to various reasons of not knowing the exact details of the car.

anyway i eventually got some bearings from Town End Garage, and now 4 months on they have let me down. the bearings that are in the car are 'BRT' bearings.

Basically there not genuine Subaru bearings. ( should i have used them ?)

i think i read on here somewhere shortly after fitting them that 'you should always fit Subaru Bearings'

i have a feeling now that i should have. has anyone else ever had trouble with aftermarket bearings especially BRT ?

Thanks all,

Dale

Not sure that fitting "non -Subaru" bearings is the problem, sure, they may not last as long as the genuine part but they should have lasted longer than 4 months.

When you say they have "let you down" do you mean they are humming? if so it could be an installation problem, usually not packed tightly enough with grease. My experience with rear bearings (Ford not Subaru) is dismal and I learned I wasnt packing them with enough grease. Now my MY97 is showing signs of rear wheel bearing howl and i'm tempted to get it done by an Impreza specialist.

Did you fit a new "speedi sleeve" when you fitted the bearings?

This sleeve fits over the end of the drive shaft where the outer oil seal runs.. It provides a new clean running surface so that the new seals lip doesn't get damaged.. If you didn't fit them then I guess thats why they have failed so quickly...

The main problem with the rear bearings is that rear seal failing and allowing water into the race and so knackering it..

I presume that You also fitted new seals at the same time? and if so was the outer seal was put on the correct way round..
As I have seen a couple of cars that had this seal back to front and so got damaged as soon as the hub was refitted..
Voila - short lived bearings..

Unhappy

all i fitted is what came with the kit

1 x bearing
1 x cir clip
1 x hub nut
3 x oil seal

i never fitted a "speedi sleeve"

i presume i fitted the outer seal correctly... but then there wasnt any instructions either.... so it could have gone any way round.

my luck would have it that it is in back to front.

i'm gonna see what prosport think.

at least now i know what type of bearing my car needs.

cheers guys

I would advise you to get a pair of speedi sleeves fitted when you refit the new bearings..
Cleaning the old face doesn't really work, as it is likely that old running face will be corroded/pitted/damaged.. therefore that is why the new sleeves are required..
