No, no, they're under the two rainstrip thingys:
You have to force the rainstrip upwards from the outer edge, and look under it.
Eventually you'll find two sort of hump-backed bridge shaped bits, bolted/welded to the roof.
the L-shaped clips go under them from the outside, then the roof bars clip to the L-clips.
Be VERY careful, as first time it's hard to get the L-clips in place properly, and if you only get them under the rainstrip, they'll FEEL firm enough, until you put any sort of load in place
Once in place, I've marked the positions inside the door openings level with the brackets, using small blobs of paint, as this makes finding them again easy.

Hold on Alzcar.. you are describing roof RACK fitment not roof BARS..
Which do you have??
The original roof bars as standard on the 5door from 97/98 and optional beforehand are different.. was told they require roof cutting to fit.. no idea if that is true though.
So do you have the bars that run across the car or along it?
If across then I appologise and Alzcar and David are spot on..
I have a set sat in my garage, another never used yet item taking up space.

5 door, I presume you are talking about the wagon? The threaded bits on the roof are covered by the rainstrips from the car. and the rainstrips for use with the roof rails are in three sections to leave a gap to bolt the rails onto... You will probably have to cut your existing ones down.

Hopefully the roof bars connect to them too.. I suspect the dealer that sold me my car knew very little as he claimed that the dealer cannot fit the roof Bars as the roof needs to be cut and that Subaru need to come out themselves to fit them.. sounds more and more fishy the more I think about it..
I'll shut up now

The story as at an end I got them done in about 2 hours in all, I went down to K T Greens this morning and was speaking to Howard who give me some very good advice, When I got home I first stripped the rains strips off, then took the mouldings off the roof lining and undid the existing bolts to reveal the holes for the roof bars. I then put the roof bars in place and cut the existing rains strips to suite and bolted every thing back together.
I now have roof bars.
