Question

Seeing as the Impreza engine has self-adjusting hydraulic valve lifters, is it really necessary to inspect and/or adjust the valve clearances? (110 kkm, frequently used on track days)

I tried searching the forum, but "valve adjustment" returned no results. I take it, it is not needed then?

If they need any checking you will know by the poor running and strange noises coming from them.

Obviously the car is getting quite high on the mileage, but it's probably a job only worth doing on an engine rebuild, along with checks of the cams etc.

I believe the 98 has solid lifters, shim adjustable, and not hydraulic lifters as in older models. This means that they should be checked and re-shimed as required. the service interval is (without checking the service book) 100,000km (62,000miles) I think.

Default valve lifters

hi all,
i have a my97 impreza 2.0l sport (phase one engine) and he's just gone over the 130.000 mark.somtimes i can hear a tapping noise put when i put foot down on gas it stops,or if left on tick over it you can hear the tapping come and go. can any one tell me what sort of lifters are fitted and how hard are they to replace and what would be the best oil to use for this type of engine.

many thanks,
gazza
