Question

Looking at getting a TEK3 remap in spring for my MY01 WRX.

There's some debate about upgrading the fuel pump at the same time.

I've read it's really necessary on the Sti, but only on the WRX if there are other significant mods.

The other thing I've read is that after a simple Tek3 remap the car should be more efficient, ie. use less fuel.

If the car is going to use less fuel why might it need a more powerful pump?

You DONT need an uprated fuel pump if the car is running standard injectors and Turbo.
Many of the specialists will tell you that you need one but only on the STI is it needed. The WRX with a Tek3 map will run fine, yes the injectors are at their limit at very high revs but they are the limiting factor not the pump.

I know of 5 MY01-03 WRX cars and none of them have had an uprated fuel pump and they all reached 285-291 BHP on the rollers.

I ve had an uprated fuel pump on mine but I ve also changed the headers and plan to do the turbo next

The likes of TSL will strongly recomend the use of a up rated fuel pump, but I didnt have the ***** to argue

cost me £130 for peice of mind

To be honest though when they are mapping the car they will be able to tell if the fuel pump is up for the job,

If you do uprate the fuel pump then you should also change the pressure regulator as the std one is overpowered and then becomes non linear and a bit variable in what pressure it provides.

Its not necessary, normally, if you are on std injectors and turbo as has already been mentioned.
