Question

MY03 wrx, needs to have its oil changed every 10k miles, thats what I am told by my local dealer, however I feel that after 10k miles of hard driving the oil will be completley knackered, my 98 classic needed its oil changing every 7500 miles, but in reality it was changed about every 3000 miles.

If you do intermediate oil changes, will it invalidate the warranty, if any of you do, do intermediate changes, how often and which oil.????????????????????????????

Most modern engine oils will cope easily with 10,000 mile intervals. Most german cars are only serviced every 30,000 miles.
If you want to change the oil more frequently, you can do so freely, but ensure you always use genuine oil filters otherwise they will be notice when it does have to go into a dealer for any work or servicing.
It is also now common practice to "cut costs" of owning new cars, so all manufacturers work alongside the oil companies to make sure they get the oil quality right, to last out the service intervals the manufacturer want to set, so keeping the service costs down to the customer who buys it.
One of the reasons the earlier subaru's visited the dealer network every 6months was in increase revenue to the dealers as they did not break down to easily, so the dealers had to have some form of money comming in, otherwise the annual servicing would of come in many years ago, so dont be fooled into doing things " as was", you are falling into "consumer practice", once you have been "trained" into doing something, you always follow suit with all cars. Change you ways, look at the oil company sites, they will explain how long an engine oil can actually last and last but not least, save your money for the fuel tank and enjoy it.

My local dealer changes my oil and filter for £25 and is happy to do intermediates, therefore warranty still in tact!

The oil may well last for that mileage, but it won't be in the same class as new oil. It will also be carrying impurities around with it despite the oil fiter. If there is enough sludge after such a high mileage, the filter could even be partly blocked and allowing the oil to bypass it.

With a high performance engine like the Scoob, it is worth changing the oil much more regularly. I change mine every 3K miles.

Everybody is right! everybody drives differently and is in different terrains.
All the above posts suggest that you gents care for your scoobs very well.
I am a believer in full synthetics and magnetics in caring for my vehicles.
