I would say that is a possibility, a rare one, but a possibility. Reason is that a mail order map is basically an estimate of what is required based on provided info. Most of the time it would provide some benefit without problem but if things are not "normal" then problems can, of course, occur. And if a car is particularly good to start with then its possible that no benefit is seen.
I map cars "remotely" but normally only when I can provide uploads to correct and receive datalogs to fully analyse, the individual car. That rules out factory remaps at this time and limits to replacement ecu's.
Having said all that we are now working on a range of mail order factory remaps based on our own experiences. As mentioned, in the vast majority of cases, this will be an acceptable upgrade.
Are you asking because you have a problem with a mail order ecu or just enquiring about the risks ?
