Question

I recently bought a Prodrive gearknob for my 99my. A dealer fitted it for me & it nearly fell off on the way home. After I tightened up all 3 grub screws (instead of the delears attempt at 2) it stayed tight for 3 weeks before getting loose again. This time it's tightened up big time!
My question is, will it come loose again, is this a standard problem? I'm worried about breaking the thread on my gearstick as the grub screw fitting is VERY Heath Robinson IMHO.

Hi Nick,

Is it getting loose because the grub screws are turning or wearing away the existing thread?

If they are turning you could try locktite - used in indutrial applications to stop screws/bolts in metal to metal applications loosening off. Should be able to get it from Halfords?

Generally, you can try to minimise vibration by "packing" the gap between the gear **** and shaft (for screw on ***** (much more of this and there will be complaints!))by wrapping as much electricians tape as it takes around the thread until the **** is a tight fit before the screws are tightened.

This has always worked for me in the past.

Let me know how you go.

Do you have the correct rubber insert fitted into the gear **** hole. I've never had such a problem with mine in 12 months.

There is a plastic insert & the dealer chose which one to use....

The locktite stuff sounds interesting, but I want to be able to get it off again (I want to get it sprayed in DBM). The gearknob seems to sit on top the thread & the grubs screws are the only things that are keeping it there. The inside of the gearknob does not have a thread.

There! I didn't say "****" once! ...oops!

Don't use Locktite if you intend to take it off again. You will round the allen key fitting in the grub screw long before you break the seal of the threads.

Update on my Prodrive gearknob...

Just having had it removed for painting by my dealer, it seems that the fitting dealer (Tiley of Bristol) cross-threaded one of the grub screws & also did not fit a sleeve. It is being replaced under warranty.
