Graham,
I've come across the STi cylinder problem indirectly. I'm in the throes of dropping a s/h STi V2 engine into my 95MY u.k. spec and the precautionary measure was taken of stripping down the block to check everything was ship-shape.This was all the more advisable given that the engine had been chipped with some indeterminate jap. spec eprom and the extra fuelling, if any, was uncertain and I'm not sure what sort of boost it had been running. Anyway, on removal of the heads, no.2 piston was found to be holed and is subsequently being replaced, the cause presumably being lack of adequate fueling coupled with high boost.
So, to avoid reoccurence, I've gone the HKS route of FCON V ecu enabling mapped trimming of the fuelling and ignition accordingly (the AFR only permits very minor adjustments-quite possibly inadequate if boost is quite high),a Group A intercooler and ERL'aquamist' mapped water-injection to combat detonation via cylinder and charge-cooling at high boost and 'hot' spark-plugs. This will permit high boost and allow significant safety-margins.
The constant use of Super Unleaded goes without saying.

What do you mean when you say "collapsing" and "collapsed"? Hole burned in it? Crown melted a bit? Complete disintegration? Con rod broken? Something else? What type of fuel was in the tank - NUL or SUL?
