I have owned my03 WRX for three weeks and thought Id better check the oil level. Checked the oil but dipstick is virtually bone dry after taking out wiping and reinserting. It has been about two hours since Ive drove the car should I take it for a run and then check it?

Cheers ran the engine a bit and then checked and its just at the L level. Contacted the garage that first serviced the car and they have used BP Visco 10/40. Can I top it up with another brand same 10/40 or should I drain and refill with Mobil 1 fully synthetic.

T-1000, you'd be glad to know I'm having this issue as well.
I spoke to my dealer abut this who says they only stick in enough oil just to reach the 'L' mark as any more just gets sucked through the seals and can damage the turbo. As I was unhappy with this response I called Subaru Technical UK and they reiterated the same fact. I did argue the point that the manual says 'make sure its always between the L and H' but they said not to worry as long as its always at 'L'... :-#

My car has just hit 7500 miles and I've done an oil change today. Just under 4L came out! Feels much better with Shell Helix Plus in ;-) I shall keep an eye out to see if the oil consumption settles down a bit.

Hope this helps.

Phil,
How many miles?

Is it a WRX03?

I guess if its been at that level for a while then you must have an older model or a special scoob thats not effected by this issue.

Don't use a fully synthetic till the car has done at least 7500 miles

cheers bob,
I've clocked the oil issue on another thread. I'm using 10w40 Semi-Synth until 10k then moving to Full Synth.

Thanks

Cheers for the help. Ive topped up the oil and it seems ok now. I will get a full oil change done with a good quality semi-synth and then change to full synth when Ive added a few miles.

We refill the Turbo's with 4.25ltrs of oil when doing an oil service.. (including new filter)
This will take the dip reading to halfway when cold.. After a run it will expand and touch the H mark..

IM issued a tech note to us that states that is what Subaru recommends..
