18" Speedlines + Handling

I love the look of the 18" wheels fitted to the WRC car. Having mentioned this to my dealer he said "(sharp intake of breath) You dont want to do that. It will ruin the handling and mke the ride very uncomfortable". Can't I fit 18" along with some sort of suspension mod ?
