Bit of a double-edged sword this one. If you modify it, you'll have to tell your insurance, and they could put your premium up, which kinda works against the entire reason you bought the car!
At end of day you're not going to get a huge amount more unless you go silly on it. The obvious stuff - filter, decat will help, but don't forget it's a heavier car with 4WD transmission losses, so there is something "holding it back" compared with your Nissan.
Probably best to think of it as a stepping stone to a turbo.

The most you're going to get is maybe another 25bhp without changing important engine bits. At end of day it's not going to transform the car, so may be more practical to make the best of what it's currently got.
At end of day, it's enough to have fun with. Sure, not as much fun as a Turbo, but it's not costing you a Turbo insurance premium either...

It's not so much "components in the machine keeping it slow", as it is a 'lack' of components keeping it slow. ie: a turbo!
Personally I'd leave it alone and buy a faster car when insurance allows.
