Hi re the above......

I have a Legacy 92.....

It does not happen all the time..... (perhaps I don't notice it)

Just by touching the accelerator pedal and moving it some 5mm I hear a relay switch 'switching'

Is this something to be concerned about or 'normal' and I just don't hear it all the time....??

Having said the above..... I have tested it on the odd occasion and the 'switching noise' is not always present....

Cheers

in advance........... one of those little niggly things eh!!

Phil

I think that's it coming out of idle mode, as there is an idle switch in the throttle sensor.

My 98 Impreza turbo does this, thought it was piston slap until my local Subaru mechanic pointed out what it was!!...

A relay mounted just aft of the offside shock absorber top mount in the engine bay was chattering. Changing the relay mount rubbers or remounting the relay can help isolate the noise if it is annoying...

Nah,

Not aircon...DEFO!!!

It happens while driving and parked up (engine on)

If I am 'gentle' can make the relay go wild !! Only did this to find out what was going on...

Again, doesn't happen all the time...... mmmmmhhhhhh mystery!!!

cheers

It is the Boost solenoid, if you lift the bonnet and rev the engine on the TB, you will be bale to notice it.. It is the brass cylindrical solenoid on the drivers side suspension turret.

So a relay clicks and you think it's busted?

Do you worry that your indicator clicks when you flick the stalk?

Thumbs up

Nah your all wrong, well okay this is my experience anyway.

Leave your foot of the accelerator wait for fan to cut in, when it cuts in wait a second then just touch the throttle you will hear the relay click and the fan stop. So if your in traffic don't leave your foot resting on the throttle as the fan won't kick in.

My Two pence worth

Pav,

Nah, I'm not a worrier........... not by a long shot!!

Just wondered why it is only 'now and again'......

Indicators???? what are they........ mine never click!!! LOL

Now reading what simmo has written, seems to point to the fact that it only happens when there is something else goin on!!

Cheers lads!!

I beleive the car doesnt come out of the factory with this ticking noise!

It therefore must be something which has worn out/knackered!

It can happen even when the engines not hot enough to need the fan...

Nah

Just my experience.
I noticed when warming down one day, heard the fan cut in and touched the throttle by accident heard a click from a relay, fan stopped, did it again to make sure same happened and when i lifted foot off fan cut back in.
I'm not saying this is what happens on legacy4x4turbo's car but what happens in mine.

Pete

If its the boost solenoid its more or less a constant quick clicking, put your head in the bonnet and see if you can pin point it, maybe stop the car first if it is the boost solenoid common problem especially after a service if they over fill the oil. pull the tubes off by some degreaser squirt it through and your away best putting the car in test mode to get the solenoid clicking..

all my legacys (3) do this i think its the switch that tells the ecu that the engine throttle has just opened
i think all cars do it but as its right at the start of throttle travel its hard to spot
try pressing the throttle gently by hand a tiny bit
the buzzing noise is arcing in the switch or relay when the contacts are just open
if you are down brigend/pencoed area and you want a demo of this
mail me.
its normal tho' honest

usually it would open so quickly you wont notice it
as you say with parking etc the throttle movement is so slow/small that you can get the arcing sound
try this with a light switch at home (bulb not f tube)

Magnet,

Yeah, mine seems as if it is in the footwell...

Richie, My original thought was something to do with the throttle.

'Dull mode on'

Do they have electric throttles then (I'm not too mechanically minded)

'Dull mode off'

Richie, you'll have to watch the WALES forum and join us on our next meet....

...... Normally held in Cardiff..... central for south wales

Would love a demo LOL

Perhaps an impreza owner could explain the differences then?

Anyone?

perhaps imprezza owners dont notice it cos the throttle is shut or wide open all the time
seriously tho' its the switching of the throttle from shut to open. perhaps the relay concerned is in a different spot in a prezza or the relay is a different type
doubt many imprezza owners may help cos from what i remember legacys are somewhat looked down as a lesser model
like i said lend me one i'll give u the answer

Richie.....

The Legacy is by NO means a 'lesser' car in the eyes of the local welsh 'mob!!!

No pi$$ taking with us lot......... nothing to force you out of the 'gang' anyways!!!

You'll have to pop down to the next one and give us a chance..... don't know whether it's the same crowd that you used to meet with....

Cheers

Phil

ps..... you'll have to come along to demonstrate the relay for me!!!

Maybe someone will take you/let you in their impreza???
