I have heard that the green ones are fine as they do not leak any residue.
Other makes might require you to clean out the air box every now and again.

Put either an ITG or Green panel filter in it, as you have a 99/00 car you can get a sensor for the maf relatively cheaply.

Part number: 22794AA010 will put you right

Got an MY99 and blew 2 MAF's in 4 weeks(Blitz SUS and LM induction kits) now running standard airbox with a K&N with no probs
Have to admit had no probs for 12 months with the SUS but the filtration was sh1te which probably killed my MAF

The ITG will (apologies Pete Croney ) leave a gunky residue in the bottom of the airbox which if fitted less than 100% can get sucked through to the intake side of things. This in turn can contaminate your MAF sensor.

Xtreme Scoobies who helpfully posted the MAF part number above seems to have missed the bigger picture though

OK so your MAF goes and you notice this due to perhaps lumpy erratic hunting at idle or just doesn't seem to be running quite 100% and it costs you around £70 to replace the part alone and you go away happy

or.....

You do what I did and notice very little (apart from the hunting idle) and in ignorance I drove the car *spiritedly* and was faced with a bill for £3,567.85 for new MY99 short block etc. as piston 2 was destroyed due to overheating due to under-fuelling, due to either a failed MAF sensor or possibly a shorted HT lead

MAF's can fail gradually and slowly so you may not notice it unless you have AFR meter

Think about it

PS I now have a dry Green Cotton panel filter if that gives you any help re your choice ...... sold to me by Pete Croney

Xtreme missed the point, doubt it........That's why they offer both ITG's & The Green Cotton Filter.

For many years the ITG was king of the hill, then came a new product which is working its way up......TSL did a spread & said it was great (green cotton filter)

So customers can see both products & make an informed decision. Personally I have never seen a ITG cause an engine failure (I know there are many threads -though please don't resurrect these!)

Excuse my complete lack of any knowledge whatsoever wont you please, but.....

How would I tell If a MAF was gone or going, in words of half a syllable or less please, lumpy idle? I think my idle is ok, about 600rpm, steady as a rock, also, just been serviced (minor) so they would have picked it up surely?

Usually if the car is running lumpy (it could be a few things though we'll keep it to two things tonight)

1. MAF
2. Idle speed control valve

The easiest way for the maf is to check with a voltage meter; this reading will pretty much test if it OK or not; then a garage will plug a new one in just to check..(I can't remember what the reading parameters are.....I'll check tomorrow though)

If its not the maf; usually the ICV

I say usually of course it could be other things....

Just read about the CBR, saw the piccies and it looked sweet, u replacing it with anything?

XtremeScoobies or Ferrarinutter or Knowlesey

The above suggests (to me anyway) that MAF's are cheap so heh..**** it...don't worry about it as you can just buy a new one

To me that's naive and ignorant advice

Taking ITG out the equation... as you have pointed out via e-mail why you don't feel that an ITG can possibly contaminate a MAF ... (so I'll be nice to ITG in future but will retain my own gut feeling re the green gunk) ....

however......

Simple question.....Do you agree that a failed MAF can cause an engine to fuel incorrectly, overheat cylinders dramatically and go boom ?

Hopefully that clears that up

Cheers

Thumbs up

Ah, in that case can I av my K&N back then?

Might go back to 'airbox minus resonator' soon as the induction kit is a bit noisy for me, although it does seem to pull better with the cone filter...

Cheers for cleaning it for me though!
