How does the thermostat work?
#2
Thermostat is shut when cold, stopping coolant going through rad.
When coolant reaches a pre determined temp, the 'stat opens letting the coolant into the rad to regulate temp.
If it jams shut, engine overhearts.
If it jams open, engine will not reach normal opperating temperature.
Hope this explains abit.

Dont know what the little disc is for, probebly somthing to do with the stats construction or something.
There filled with some sort of wax wich expands when its gets hot and so pushes against the spring, opening the 'stat.

Not sure if I'm thinking about the thing you're thinking of but...]
the little rotating bit in a hole on the stat is to prevent the hole from "furring" up and blocking. The hole is there to allow air to escape when filling the system (to get rid of air locks)
as the stat will be in the "closed" position.
My tuppence worth.
