Can you actually hear it over the engine noise and if so how loud is it? loud enough to hear inside and out of the car?

would it actually happen after a small howking of the boost when you come to a standstill coz i heard something suspicious yesterday - couldnt tell if it was a far off shotgun noise or something else

please put my mind at rest!

cheers

You wouldn't normally be able to hear det over the normal sound of the engine, unless it was of rod-bendingly bad proportions. That's why knock sensors need filtering circuitry to split out "normal" engine noise.

Are you sure you didn't hear your car backfiring - that's a totally different kettle of fish!

Det will appear(if at all) on wide open throttle, or full engine load, so you wont be hearing it at standstill.

And yes it can be heard over the noise of the engine (if it's bad).

Sounds more likely you heard a heat sheild rattle or similar.
