Angry

Have just bought a impreza Terzo and was wondering if anyone else has experienced trouble when putting the car into 1st when cold. Have no trouble if I start the car in gear but have real problems when putting into first after the car has just been started (only from cold.

Any hints or tips would be welcolmed for this impreza beginner.

Unhappy

Thanks,

Have checked the oil and it appears to be OK. Not sure whether I should change it regardless?

If it is the linkage - can it be replaced?

advice much appreciated

This problem has been mentioned quite often. Most people advise putting a good oil like Castrol Syntrax 75-90 in the box. You can get it from Halfords. You need about 3.5 litres.

Depends on the oil you may be better changing it to fully synthetic

Of course once the oil has warmed up I presume its OK going in?

Ok, thanks, I will change the oil to Syntrax - I have seen this mentioned frequently so I assume its a worthy oil.

And yep, it goes in fine when warm!

If it is fine when warm then replacing the oil to Syntrax should fix, the viscosity of the oil will do what you mentioned make it hard to select gears when cold and get better when warm.

I have a kind of similar problem... can't get in 1st gear while moving very slowly in traffic... got to come to a halt before I can. Is it the same thing? Should chaning oil solve it?

No I don't think this is the same thing. I just have trouble getting it into first when I first start the car. Its fine when it warms up or if I start the car in gear.

I am set to change the gearbox oil next week and will post the outcome - hopefully all will be fine and dandy.

Thanks for all the advice

Try engaging and releasing the clucth prior to trying to get into 1st when you first start it up.

Mine is sometimes reluctant to go into 1st when cold. I find the above helps.

I have since changed to Syntrax during routine servicing (kerr-ching....it's expensive - even at trade prices ). And I can't definetly say its any better, as usually I use reverse before first.
