Need some more info..
Try and determine if its your brake master cylinder thats shagged?
With the engine off press the pedal down hard - does it stop before hitting the floor then gradually get lower?
If so it maybe the seals in the cylinder.
If it hits the floor straight away what happens if you pump the pedal? does it firm up and stay solid or gradually go to the floor?
again probably cylinder
When u start the engine does the pedal dip (when pressing it) - if not maybe servo related.

either take it back to the garage, or if you want it done properly (as the mechanic does not sound very good if he let the car go like that)buy a brake bleeding kit that uses air from a spare tyre, as it will push loads of fluid through the pipes and bleeds them properly...

Have the calipers ever been removed or changed?
I once had a customer who fitted his new 4 pot callipers on the wrong side, so that the bleed nipples were at the bottom, instead of the top. You bleed out clean fluid, as all the air is sitting in the top of the calliper.
It was only when he came back for his 4th litre of brake fluid that he agreed to let me look at the car.
