Yes, I had a heap of bent fins, sat on the radiator, sore back legs and backside just used a thin screw driver, then put the screw driver in the hole and move from one side to the next lines up the bent fins with the good ones below nicely.

I am sure if you work it out a guard over the intercooler vs bent fins, bent fins will affect air flow through the core much more.

Looks like i've bent a few fins on the IC. How easy are they to straighten?

Is there anything i can use to shield the IC from further damage from stones.

 

A small flat head screwdriver or tooth pic will straighten the fins. It's easy but time consuming.
Shields can be bought, but i can't remember where from

 

Toothpick worked for me. I had removed the I/C anyway to fit Samco hoses and a shield from Power Engineering in Uxbridge (about £45). Just don't put it on your lap to work on as you'll bend even more fins!

Keep hearing different views on shields
Some peeps rave over them - but I've a mate who's just had his link mapped and the first thing the mapper did was remove the shield, saying it restricts airflow to much.
Anybody care to elaborate ?

I had an intercooler shield on for a while, but not now. I had the car rolling-road tested, and the first thing the chap said (on seeing the engine bay) was that it needed to come off. Apparently they block airflow to the i/c in a serious way. I'm going to settle with staightening the fins occasionally.
