Morning all
My RB5 is having its 4 year service on Monday (the first since i've owned it)and I know that the main dealer who's doing it uses Engine Flushing Oil.
....Does anyone have any opinions on this stuff?I've heard stories where it can often do more harm than good,ie:-causing oil leaks and premature engine wear etc...particularly on older vehicles.
Sooo..my question is. Should i ask them not to use it,or is it ok?
The car has done 25k and uses Castrol RS 10-60 btw,
TIA Jon

Flushing oil is thin and used to clean out the system particularly if the oil change has been left way past the recommended period and has changed to "black treacle". No reason why it should cause oil leaks etc on an engine in good condition. If you change the oil at shorter periods, ie 3000 miles, the engine will stay clean inside and will last a lot longer too. I presume the oil has been changed during your ownership, at 25K it would not be in very good condition. The engine should only be run in neutral gear with flushing oil in it.

Just my personal opinion but i would be very wary of using it, because its so thin, which it is! what happens if the oil film between crank journal and shell bearing 'shears' even on tickover it could IMOH with flushing oil, hey presto, i need a new engine!

Nah, i wouldnt bother, certainly not with that mileage. For one, i dont think its worth the risk and 2, it wont need it, especially with the DSH. Just make sure they use the rite grade like a 15-50. ie, definately not something like 10-40. Mind, if its a suburu dealer they will know this anyway.
Edited to say that i think castrol RS is ok too but have you thought about Motul 300v or Mobil 1 10-50, these both seem to be very highly rated for these engines, especialy the former!
Just a thought.
Gary.
