I am told that the sti 3 has more waterways than the 4 & 5 does this mean that their is a special head gasket for this model or will a std english subaru impreza head gasket do the job

As far as I am aware, there is no difference between STi Version 3 and STi Version 4 gaskets. Both are the thicker steel laminate type and are unavailable from UK Subaru dealer. I have never seen any difference in the waterways.

We have stock at API Engines if it helps.

"unavailable" from UK subaru dealers????
You sure about that?? Whats the difference between them and any other EJ20 Head gasket of similar years?? They look the same as any other engine Ive come across, and Ive never had any problems sourcing head gaskets.

Stevie,

I must be honest, I didn't think the ST 3/4 "steel" head gasket was available from UK dealers either.

The STi5/6 gasket is the same as the '99/2000 thinner steel gasket, but I was under the impression that the only '97/98 gasket available from a dealer was the composite type.

Do you have the pt.no. that will make life much easier.

Mark.

Thanks Mark, The thicker steel gaskets [ V3 & 4] are not used on any UK cars. They are a similar thickness as the composite ones and i know of many an STi 3/4 running around on the 'wrong' gaskets out of either ignorance or cost considerations. The part number when entered on a dealer computer is recognised but comes up as 'NOT AVAILABLE ' in the UK

As for obtaining a part number, you'll find that the regular sources remove the part number stickers so that you cannot order from Japan directly and save money.........

Perhaps I was wrong about being available at UK Dealers. I assume that they are the 1.6mm thick steel items that GGR sell then ( and keep in stock ). If so, then I did have a part no at one time. I'll check to see.
GGR usually tore off the part number from the gasket, but there was one time the number was still on it. Not sure if I wrote it down.
I'll also add, that price wise, there was very little between them and the composite gaskets from the dealers.

Stevie, Don't break your neck looking up a part no for the thin steel gaskets, the're about +/- £19.oo each which is very similar to the composite jobs. STi3 /4 thick steel sell for any where between £85.00 a pair [API price] and £300 which is the highest I've been told of [ by the buyer, sorry sick buyer ] David

PS I seem to remember the thin ones being suffix AA482's

I have no intentions looking up part numbers for the thin ( 0.5mm ) gaskets.
I do realize that the thick ones ( 1.6mm ) which I am currently using on my own car, must be the STI3/4 gaskets you refer to.
I got them from GGR, and they were about £40 each.
Composite gaskets are also about 1.5mm thick, and I have previously used them too, as it is what was fitted to the original engine in my car.
